Strikeout - Rifleman Question

I have listened to every A&M baseball game on the 12th man radio network.
I like working on some project or the other in the garage or at my electronics bench while listening to the game on the radio broadcast.

When there is a strikeout, the PA plays the old Rifeman theme.
It starts out with a slow tympani roll and then some horns.
On the last six notes Baaa buuuu bahh buhh bah Baaaaaaaa!

OK here's the question:

Is the Olson crowd singing some words to that last part? Or do I just have a vivid imagination?

When did this start? I remember doing it as a student when I was in college station 2005-2010 (yeah I took a victory lap)

There's a discussion about it in one of the Olsen tradition threads.

I've been doing it so long now that I don't remember not doing it.

It's perfect that he fires exactly 12 shots. I had no idea of the number until we counted a few years back and couldn't believe how perfect that was.

Here are four threads that the Google Machine has returned. I have not gone back through them so I don't know how much or any discussion is given over to the Rifleman Theme.

Holy cow, a lot of bellyaching in this 2004 thread from folks mad about the "guess the number of train engines" tradition. Just shows people will always complain about something.

That's exactly what won Schloss over and why he quit fighting to get rid of it.

He was fighting to get rid of it?

We looked it up the other day because my wife was asking about it, and I think I remember it being around '02, because some girl was saying it and it pissed her boyfriend off so much he snapped at her, and so the rest of the students started saying it with her to further piss off said boyfriend.

Jk you been around for a while. Saw your comments back in one of the threads.

The FEEL SO GOOD was on a thread this year about ( I'm old so my memory…..) someone said that after the Rifleman played and it stuck.

Too many cool things associated with Olsen!!

When he first was hired, he mentioned wanting to get rid of it. Lots of anger from fans, he met with members of 203 to discuss things.

He told us at the women's clinic in January that what actually changed his mind was the 12 shots.

Thats what I remember. There was a girl that would sing it and it pissed off her boyfriend so the rest of 203 sang it with her.

Around the same time there was a Verizon ad on the scoreboard with the "Can you hear me now" guy. 203 would yell no.

This was before texts so people would call and try to find friends. If someone had their flip phone to their ear on the first row everyone would stand up and yell over here so the late people couldn't find friends.

We only yelled if they were just chatting on their phone. If they were looking for someone specific, we'd ask their name to help find them.

exact same Rifleman song AND exact same video was played when i was there late 80's…. but we did NOT say "it makes me feel so good"… not sure when that silly deal started.
jkag89

The sound clip was played but we did not have a video board at Olsen until the 2000 season. We did not even have a message board above the score board until 1990.

hmmmm… my memory must be a little old.. would have sworn the video was there late 80's to '93 when i was there.. maybe i'm thinking back when i returned some?

Thankfully now -- with the help of the video board as well as Sean doing the Lord's work many years ago -- it seems that most people know the The Rifleman used a lever gun and that pumping is not an appropriate action. Whew, thank goodness.

No sir. You can get a reminder of the park circa your timeframe on youtube though.
Here's a good one from 99!

The video quality makes this look so much older than 99! I was confused for a moment when I saw the Rec

2-300 interlaced lines versus 1k or 4k progressive lines is an absolutely massive difference in total number of pixels.

DD Grubbs, the first PA guy at Olsen started playing the Rifleman after strikeouts in the early 80's. He talks about it in his book but doesnt give the exact year. He says he started playing player specific songs in 1984 for relief pitcher Beje Mahoe who was from Hawaii. The walk up songs started from that and the Rifleman during that time as well. I have seen video from 1987 where the Rifleman was played so it started between 1984 and 1987. I'm going to try to check and see if I can narrow it down more.

I believe it was prior to that. It was already a full blown "thing" I got to campus in fall of '00.....I remmeber a fish camp counselor telling me about it along with Dylan Holt's greatness.

I was always under the impression that it dated back to the 80s

One of the things that I hadn't heard mentioned about the Rifleman is Chuck Conners played college baseball and basketball and played in both the MLB and NBA and is one of just 13 athletes to have played in both.

Another is the Rifleman show had a wonderful setup: single man rearing his son by himself.

It was an inspired choice all the way around.

I can remember after the rifleman song played we would pretend like we were cocking a lever action rifle.
