I would discount the home run records from the 80s and 90s

check the dimensions of OSU's stadium in the 80s

and then the quality of pitching in the WAC plus the high altitude venues was a paradise for Rice players in 1997

Wood or gtfo.

However, if so, the chase by Monty, Condon et al is to 33 set by Cags last year. Which will come down. And then next year this one will fall. Probably.

Monty. Then Jace. Then Grahovac. (if their draft eligibility falls that way - not sure). I like it. Someone clip Condon's hamstring.

Allie P Reynolds was not a band box dimension wise. I personally don't recall if it had the reputation of the wind being a huge factor like Dan Law Field in Lubbobk.

Allie P. Reynolds Stadium had normal dimensions. I don't recall if the wind affected the carry of the ball.

Many years ago I had a conversation with AB2 while at Allie P. Reynolds. He told me that he could stand on home plate, relieve himself, and the stream would go over the left field wall.

I don't remember the dimensions, but I went to a bunch of games there. It was an absolute bandbox.
Maybe it was. The listed dimensions are 330 down the lines. 390 left field gap, 385 right field gap, 400 dead center.

Monty is on fire right now. What's his number in the last, what, 10 ish games. Or the last 5. Lol. Let's hope he keeps that pace and breaks a few more windows.

I'm believe Braden has 10 in the last 10 games.

Edit: there was some stat about his last 10 games, but writing that out doesn't sound right.

I would not discount pre-Gorilla Ball Era home run totals. IMO the bats did not really start to get out of control until the late '90s. Incaviglia's 48 bombs are legit.

This. Inky was a straight up monster.
My brothers and I used to say the game isn't over until the fat kid swings…

Naw. The bats in '85 were more akin to the bats of today.

I remember when the green Eastons came out earlier that decade. I still have one. 34" barrel, 32 ounces. I made fun of the kid that was an earlier purchaser because his was 34, 33. That became obsolete pretty quickly. Mine became obsolete quickly. Played on teams with the super rich kid who upgraded every year. Through the 80s, the ounces for the same barrel kept going down. Then the black magic's hit the shelfs. Like 28 or 29 ounces or some non sense. Then the materials got better? Or something through the 90s. Not sure but baseballs were coming off the bats hotter than ever in the nineties.

The Black Magic was only a minus 3. Very tame compared to the juiced bats.

Not surprised. Never got to the Magic. My green Easton is still good for cracking skulls though.

Ok, I was wrong, but not by much.

In the last 10 games (including last night), Braden has hit 9 HRs, with two multi-HR games. He has also hit 5 HRs in the last 4 games.

I'm not sure about this, but, I think those dimensions were after they rebuilt the fences (Wiki suggests this was done in 1993). I seem to recall that originally, it was about 380 to center. Looking at it on Google Earth suggests that it was more like 390 to even in its latter form. Old aerials suggest that right field and center were pretty short.

Edit: I'm way more interested in this than the stuff I could be working on.

Found a 1992 photo of a Hall of Fame induction at Allie P and you can see the centerfield fence in the background. Tough to make out the number definitively, but I'm going to say 391 (it's definitely a 3 on top)

Doing some googling. Baseball America has an archived article on Easton bat history. Aluminum gave way to carbon and then composite? Easton introduced carbon (carbon core) in the early 90s. The "next big breakthrough". James Easton started with arrows for decades before taking it to bats.

The first green easton's weighed like wood. The B5 Pro's got as low as -4, which is what I remember. Then the Black Magic (B9) was -3 as Colorado stated. But it was the next generation or "big thing" at the time.

But like I said, still have my fat green easton. Plus a knife and a gun. Need to upgrade. Probably.

I suspect the bats have been gradually (and unceremoniously) tweaked since BBCOR. HRs are WAAAAY up since BBCOR inception

As for the balls, the seams were lowered about a year or 2 into BBCOR to give more "carry", but that doesn't account for the power hitting of today

Bats, balls, maybe a combination

Whatever it is, it's juiced up compared to BBCOR inception, and lower seams

Maybe but I think the seam change was more recent. We went a while with small ball. It seems like that was only five seasons or so ago.

The seams were lowered in 2015, 9 seasons ago

But power hitting is way up since then. We're back to near gorilla ball. 7 HRs on Saturday

Either the bats, balls, or both have gradually added "pop", IMO

I won't say the bats today don't have more pop than they did 10-15 years ago when BBCOR first came on the scene but every bat is tested before college games to test the compression and has a certification sticker.

So, they may have a different spec than the original BBCOR bats but they do test them. So maybe the balls are juiced more. Or maybe college kids are bigger and stronger facing higher velo than ever so when they barrel up 95mph it's gonna go a long way. I mean, Tx State's starter last night was consistently hitting 94-95. The prevalence of guys throwing 90+ these days compared to just 10-15 years ago is off the charts.

I count 18 at bats for Monty in the last 4 games. 5 HR. Because we all know that past performance is indicative of future results...we can expect a Monty HR every 3.6 ABs now.

Speaking of home runs, Sorrell has 3 homers in just 9 starts, tying him for 4th on the team. With more starts likely coming his way, I bet he moves into 4th all by himself pretty soon. That guy is gonna be really really good.
