Whoever put this together really crapped the bed. It really shouldn't be super difficult to put together a tournament with no winner where you play three different teams in three days.
The Rangers have had three weekend events with 14 teams. It's not easy getting that many teams to come to town, especially when you throw conference affiliation and travel logistics into the mix.aggies1960 said:

So how the heck far out are these teams scheduled? It's not like any of those have magically changed conferences the last few years.Farmer1906 said:hsjnlssmith89 said:Rule#2 said:trouble said:

Can someone explain to me why we play ASU twice and not TCU?
What I read was that since USC and Arizona St. are in the same conference, they don't want to play each other this early since they have a conference series against each other later in the season. So, to accommodate, TCU plays USC twice and we play Az. St. twice.
Schloss talked about this on TA radio earlier in the week. The weekend was originally A&M, Ms St, USC, Az St. We didn't want to play MSU OOC and the assumption of USC & ASU didn't want to either. Schedule was set. MSU drops out. TCU joins.
No conspiracy. No bad blood. Kind of boring.

I was there as a freshman in 1978. Rod Dedeaux and USC baseball program were something to see. Awesome program back then. Olsen Field didn't have lights until 1980 which I thought was unusual at the time. lol.McInnis said:

Not at all unusual for college ball parks then. If I remember correctly, Cougar High didn't even have lights as late as 1993. The Ags swept the Coogs that season but it wasn't easy. Saturday DHs were still the norm then. Despite the first game being a scheduled 7 inning tilt it took a while since it was a football game score slugfest. The second game went to extra innings but had to be concluded on Sunday due to darkness.Quote:

The director for the Rangers said on the broadcast Schloss called them last year and said we want in on the tournament but they were booked until 2026. They added us by adding another weekend.B-1 83 said:So how the heck far out are these teams scheduled? College baseball was run on the cheap. Even though the Disch was built with lights, the t.u. AD would not let them use them until later in the season. They actually had day games called for darkness despite having lights. That's how ridiculously miserly baseball was treated.stexagg said:I was there as a freshman in 1978. Uh, rather than being a smart ass, why couldn't you have just explained it. Not everybody has your PhD in tournament scheduling.yell_on_6th st said:B-1 83 said:So how the heck far out are these teams scheduled? Actually, Jimmy Carter screwed up night baseball at the time due to an energy ( mismanagement) crisis. My senior year in HS there was no night games in 1976. Carter was POTUS through 1980

TCU replaced Mississippi State on this schedule. We were not going to play Mississippi St, because they are a conference foe, during this preseason slate. So when they slotted TCU in they kept the same schedule. It wasn't a tournament. Just a few games at a MLB stadium to sell tickets and get some decent p5 competition in.B-1 83 said:Uh, rather than being a smart ass, why couldn't you have just explained it. I'm curious, did you guys that attended the games in Arlington see any USC or ASU fans there? I guess those teams were invited because of their name recognition but I'll bet attendance would have been better with some regional teams. The Astros invited Louisiana Lafayette (or whatever they call themselves now) and Texas St. and I'm guessing they brought fans to their games.
There were some, but not a lot. They had a little section behind their dug out and a few others scatter throughout. I'm sure the tournament knew that going in and didn't expect them to bring many fans. It was pretty much all A&M & TCU. I am guessing with just us there though, the tournament made money.McInnis said:

Basically, just parents. One of the attractions for schools like A&M to play in a tournament is to get some different teams on the schedule beyond the usual suspects. It helps a little from an RPI standpoint, and it's just more fun. So, while the organizers might sell a few more tickets with second tier local teams, they may make it a little bit less attractive to the big name local teams to come.McInnis said:
