Not preferred, but certainly understandable for small schools especially in the north.
They remain, however, a complete abomination for large southern programs, as is the case for our tea sipping neighbors.

I wonder why we don't schedule weekend series against Texas schools like Sam Houston or Dallas Baptist? It would be better competition and lower travel costs.
Of course the last two seasons the Aggies have lost their second series of the season to Penn and Portland St. Maybe better competition isn't always better.

But seriously, RPI or not you want games against these types of teams early so you can tinker, and so you can learn which new players are likely to be valuable reserves/replacements later in the year should they be needed. If you play tourney teams every weekend it's hard to get deep into the roster to learn which kids flinch when the lights are on.
I think we would rather keep the closer teams for mid-week games during conference play.
