I believe in Dettmer, but I also believe in Johnny fullstaff. Coach will have everyone who is available on a very short leash.

Has it occurred to you folks that the quality of the plate umpire plays way too much importance in the outcome of the game compared to other aspects?

A coach needs to put more effort into scouting the umpires than scouting the other team. The strike zone of some of these guys is so subjective and situational, an observer has no clue what an individual call might be. Their work on the bases appears pretty good to me, but subjectivity rears it's ugly head when they get behind the plate.
Probably would be better off spending your energy coaching your team to make adjustments to what blue is calling. Blue last night was consistently calling the outside ball against us.
Our guys needed a 40" bat to hit those "strikes".

It plays into it a lot esp if one pitcher is consistently getting calls that another is not.
It also greatly matters with respect to the style of pitcher and his particular "out" pitch. Even if called identically both ways (it wasn't), the impact can be far greater on some pitchers.

I don't mean this as an excuse. Consistency from blue is all we can ask for and hope to adjust to. Some pitchers can live out there low and away all day and if he's calling it, of course you have to keep throwing it.

The ATL braves staff is a great example
They could hit that spot and if Blue was calling it a strike they were hard to beat
Even if blue is giving both teams that spot both starters might not be as good at hitting the spot

Crowd the plate and battle (foul off) anything on the outside with 2 strikes. If blue is going to consistently call that pitch, it's up to us to adjust whether we like it or not.

How about we shut them out? No? If we can shut out UT, and hold Arky/swamp kitties to 4 runs, I truly believe we can shut down tree

Do we know who is behind the plate tonight? Which game did they last call? What was his zone like?

I can't help but think of Dettmer in the CWS last year. He got pulled early in a loss to OU (first game), but came back 4 days later and pitched fantastic against Notre Dame. Here's to hoping for a Notre Dame performance.

I haven't cut Dettmer much slack this year (deservedly), but I have a funny feeling about tonight. Something in my gut tells me we get ND Dettmer tonight. This is a huge opportunity for him to prove that he can win at this level (he hasn't done much of that so far).

Three keys for tonight.

1) Dettmer needs to live at the bottom of the zone

2) Jeff Head needs to call the bottom of the zone

3) We need to score a lot of runs, because 1 & 2 probably aren't both going to happen.

I think we've had issues with Jeff not giving Dett the bottom of the zone in the past.
