This was happening to me last year on a firestick. I finally upgraded to a Amazon cube and don't have that issue anymore. What type of device are you using? Sometimes a reboot of the device helps too.
Sony Bravia "Uber Class" LED from 2022, with Google TV operating system, ESPN as a pre loaded app on TV.

Thankfully, it has stopped buffering for now.

Katy Perry music is playing now in background as pitcher warms up. If it's gonna buffer, please do so while Ms. Perry is playing. Ugh.
