SIAP: When did the genderizing of the CWS begin?

I didn't pay as much attention to the College World Series last year other than to see how Mississippi State was doing and idly root for them against texas because we know the 'sips don't deserve nice things, so I may have missed the change.

When did people start using the #MCWS on social media to reflect the College World Series? Call me old fashioned, but the #CWS always referred to Omaha and baseball and #WCWS always referred to Oklahoma City and softball. I'm seeing more #MCWS now, and wondering if this just started this season? Or was it happening last year and I didn't notice?

Is this a reaction by the NCAA after their embarrassment at the women's NCAA tournament last year, now they're trying to make everything seem equal? #MarchMadness now refers to both the men and the women, so now we have to make sure we use #MCWS and #WCWS so the women aren't offended because #CWS is exclusive and refers to only the men?

I know hashtags and social media is definitely serious business, but it was something I noticed and wondered about.

One issue might be that #CWS is more closely tied to the Chicago White Sox than the College World Series.

That has been true long before now....doesn't really explain the change other than what OP said above. "Oh shoot I was looking for college baseball not the Chicago White Sox." Even then on most social media I've seen it more as #ChiSox.

Just searched #cws on Twitter, no reference to Chicago White Sox showed up, but plenty of references to Omaha did.

It's not just the hashtag. ESPN is calling it the "Men's College World Series". Heard one of the announcers call it that last night. SEC now called it that on the latest episode. No doubt it's a "social justice" change.

It's new this year. Here's a twitter search clearly showing they did not use it last year. For example:

I am guessing this is somehow related to the new ESG initiative (or whatever the equivalent is for non-profits). Softball has been the WCWS for quite some time so this seems like an attempt to make them similar in naming convention, rather than just special language for women's sport.

Completely innocuous in this case but also mostly unnecessary imo.

Lots of the changes we are having to make in technical documentation in my day job are far more problematic (e.g. bye bye master cylinder and slave cylinder; those words can no longer be used...)

I don't really care what they call it, as long as we're one of the last (and hopefully the last) team(s) standing at the end of the season.

I think its related to the fallout from the way the NCAA handled running and promoting the men's and women's basketball tournaments. I don't mind the name change since it is silly to designate the women's event by gender but not the men's for an organization that claims to support all sports equally (even though we know they don't)

Do we all of the sudden know what "men" and "women" are? That would be a step in the right direction for Mickey and the left.

Pretty sure girls can play baseball but boys can't play softball in the NCAA. So…it should be CWS and WCWS. I don't actually care though.

Calling it the men's CWS is not new

You've not been paying attention for years if you never heard "men's college world series."

There are some ncaa swim teams that would disagree about rules on these things.

I refuse to add the M. Sorry to all the ladies that got their knickers in a wad over their lack of control of all the men in the world…

More seriously: call them both CWS.

It may have been formally named Men's CWS (forever?), but it was not commonly used on anything other than formal signage. It wasn't a thing for announcers and certainly not among fans.

I'm not a regular on this board so didn't know if this topic had been previously addressed.

Putting in a SIAP in the title is an invitation for someone to reply and say, "This has been addressed before, he is the link to the previous discussion." It's just good etiquette.

What fallout?

The NCAA could not spend a dime on advertising March Madness and spend billions advertising the women's tournament and the men would still generate more money and interest by orders of magnitude.
