My dad was on that team and made the trip. He's still watching Aggie baseball today.

Among the starters for A&M that year were an NFL Hall of Famer (Yale Lary) and one of the winningest coaches in college baseball history (Al Ogletree).

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

Jim Dishman. Went 0-1. Think he got to pinch hit in the last game.

Dishman pinch hitter for Tankersley in the 9th against Utah.

Last page I posted has all of the Aggie player stats

The inclusion of fielding percentage in the first article is really interesting. We see team fielding percentages these days, but seeing individual ones is less common.

That same article today would be more likely to include DRS and OPS rather than FP and BA.

Funny how they credit individual players with outs. Looks like first base is credited for most of the outs, while catcher seems to be credited for strike outs. 2nd baseman has a few more outs than other positions, which I assume get credited for pop ups/fly balls.

That is still done today, it's just that it's not really published like that. Catchers get putouts on strikeouts (assuming there isn't a dropped third strike thrown to first) and first basemen get the putout on throws to first (plus pop outs they catch), so they will typically lead the team in putouts.

I am with you on the general idea of the difference in the stats that are included in the articles versus what we see today. It's always evolved (and continues to), but seeing stats like this is pretty striking.

These stats are still compiled they just are not part of box scores anymore.

The third baseman was all-SWC and all-district with a .158 batting average. Must have been a hell of a third baseman!

Article on first page: Chuck Dressen getting fined $100 for not leaving the bench after being ejected, caught wearing a disguise. Bobby Valentine's inspiration?

Format was more like the conference tournaments. Needed some serious arms to play 4-5 games in 5 days. And only 18 players!

Also interesting seeing the article about MacArthur bashing the Truman administration for their handling of the Korean War.

Thanks for posting! I loved reading these. Funny that the fact that the Aggies were flying to Omaha was mentioned before anything about the games. That must've been a big deal at that point!

Had the pleasure of knowing two members of that team. Pat Hubert, All American pitcher, and big John De Witt. Pat was a large animal vet in his home town of Riviera (he had 4 cute daughters- had a crush on one)! His father owned Hubert's Danceland there in Riviera.

Anyone else notice the game times? There was a 2:08 and 2:09. Longest one was like 2:57.

Also Hubert pitched game 1 and 3 of the series against Arizona to go to the CWS. Such a different game these days.

Appreciate the thread, those unis look familiar...
