Texas Southern Baseball Team Wins First-Ever Southwestern Athletic Conference

Houston, TX- The Tigers of Texas Southern claimed their first-ever SWAC Baseball Title, as they swept the Devils of Mississippi Valley State 18-1 in one of two matches between the squads today at Baseball USA Complex. A fan crowd of 483 watched as the Tigers fell to the Devils in the first match-up 7-6. This nail-bitter was followed by a Tiger 18-1 sweep, clinching a mark in history for TSU’s baseball program.
In the first game, Texas Southern built a 6-0 led in the third inning. The Tigers suddenly began performing error after error, allowing the Devils to tie the game 6-6 going into the ninth inning. Valley scored one run in the bottom of the ninth, winning the game 7-6. This victory gave both TSU and Valley one loss, creating a tie breaker game.
Both teams remained scoreless in the first inning. Texas Southern scored the game’s first points as junior right fielder Corey Alexander scored on a walk and senior left fielder Damon Burns scored on a HBP. The Tigers went scoreless in the third and fourth inning but gave up one score to MVSU on an error.
Texas Southern then pushed it up a gear as their rowdy Tiger fans got behind them and started to hunt down a win. From the fifth inning on, TSU came out on top hitting the ball well and turning up the defense. The Tigers scored four runs in the fifth inning including a homer from freshman third baseman Herman Coachman and senior first baseman Calvin Fugett.
The Tigers returned scoring three runs in the sixth inning; including another homerun by Fugett and four runs in the seventh, including a homer from senior short stop Marcelo Garcia bringing the score to 13-1. The Tigers anxiety flared even higher as the fans cheered them on and totaled five hits in the eighth inning. Senior pitcher Dominic Capehart pitched the top of the ninth for the Tigers and sealed the game 18-1.
Sophomore pitcher Jesus Guerra not only won the game for the Tigers, but also pitched nine innings giving up only nine hits for one run and striking out six of 33 at bat.
Fugett led the Tigers offensively with five hits and five RBI’s. He also led TSU defensively with eight putouts and five assists. “This moment for us means so much, you really can’t put it in words,” said Fugett. “We’ve worked so hard to get here and this moment right now is beyond what you would imagine.” I’m just glad I could help my team.”
Three Tigers totaled two doubles on the day including; Garcia, Fugget, and Alexander. Senior catcher Julio Alvarez led the Tigers with seven PO’s.
This championship if the Tiger’s first SWAC Title in the history of Texas Southern baseball. “We’ve been trying to get this win for the last ten years,” said head coach Candi Robinson. “I am the most proud because these are the guys that dedicated themselves and stayed with the program.”
Coach Robinson was named Coach of the Year and Mario DeLeon was named Most Valuable Player.
