I have criticized Dave many times in the past, but after listening to the goobers for UofH as I drove in from Stephenville this evening, I will have to say that Dave should be in the Hall of Fame of Broadcasting.

They were horrible! Maybe you got 1/2 of the pitches called. Of course, they only got the call right about 75% of the time. They were goofy as all get out and didn't quite understand that the reason for a SRO crowd was due to the fact that the Aggies were in town, not because everyone loves UofH.

I'll second that. The UH guys reminded me of Friday night high school football commentators... and you're right about the crowd thing.

We did out number the U of H crowd and we were into the game and loud.
I have listened to the U of H radio guys before and they are terrible. Pep rally anyone!

Personally I have always liked Dave South. I always felt that he was very good and the only reason he ever caught any flack was because of the people on these types of boards who like to ***** about everything and then there are those who go:
" HUH WHAT??....Dave South sucks.....Hell...I hate Dave too...HE SUCKS!!!

But you are right the UH guys sucked.

It's called "play-by-play" announcer for a reason.

I wish Dave would "ramp up" each play... what's happening now, what's the count, who's on base and how they got there, what's the score, how many outs, what's the inning... on every play.

that sort of thing... the radio station I have to listen to comes in real fuzzy and sometimes I don't have more than 20 or 30 seconds at a time so the ramp up is real important to me. You can't imagine my frustration knowing my reception is about to go out, going through an at-bat sequence without knowing what inning it is, what the score is, who is on base, or even what the count is sometimes.

In comparison to Craig Way (the horns play-by-play guy) Dave could definitely improve his game. Listen to Craig Way for one play of a game and you'll understand what I mean. You could keep a pretty good score book just listening to him.

That said, I like Dave. His style is uniquely Aggie and I just wish he wouldn't neglect the basics.

I would hate to compare any part of our athletic program with cougar high, including
our radio announcer...the schools, the support,
the $$$, etc. are not in the same league.
We need to strive for excellence in all areas,
including having the best we can find and afford!!

Craig Way is good, but he screams way too much.

i was listening to the last arkansas game two weeks ago and it was the bottom of the ninth, we had rallied to the two run lead. there were two outs and two men on...the batter hit a pop fly and this is how dave called it:

quote:
Oh and that's a high pop fly to shallow right field. We got the second basemen going back, no wait that's the right fielder...silence...silence. Yeah...that was the right fielder...silence...silence...and that'll be an out.

He didn't say, 'That's a pop fly...the Ags can end it here...and they do. Your final score...' It's things like that that bug me.

Although it's not as bad as when our color commentator in football said, 'We'll be going this way and they'll be going that way.' before going into overtime two years ago.

This is my prototypical Dave Southism: I was driving from Austin to College Station to see the last half of the Tech game on Friday afternoon in like 2002. Anyway, I'm listening to the game on the radio, and I hear this:

"And that's a long fly ball to left field... Mavroulis is moving... and he's not going to get it."

So at this point, you are think, "Oh crap, 'long fly fly ball and he's not going to get it'... that means they hit a home run because that's how homer announcers call away home runs." About 5 seconds later, he says something about the count now being like 2-2 and you can figure out the batter is still at the plate rather than updating the score... and you think, "huh? OH..... it must have been a foul ball." It's stuff like that.

I like Dave's voice, but he isn't good at describing the play; he's really bad about leaving out information. If our games were televised rather than on the radio, he might be better, but he's just not very great at being precise in describing what he is seeing. Dave does the game like you are sitting there next to him watching what he is watching rather than giving necessary details to someone who can't see the game.

That said, he's better than a lot of announcers in college baseball. It seems like some guys out there think they are auditioning to have their own show on Comedy Central rather than calling a game. A little humor is good, but the primary reason I'm listening to you isn't to hear jokes or what you think are funny observations, I want to hear the game.

In defense of Dave, I listened to the nebraska/Utah State football game last season while driving to our game at Kyle.

I rarely knew which team had the ball. I figured that Nebraska, with their level of support and extensive network would have much better.

After that, I decided that most of the Dave criticism is unfounded.

I listen to all the home games and I always know what Dave is talking about. Oh yeah, I watch the games also on AUA.
Considering all things I'll take Dave any day. I do prefer Tuberville though.

You've got to be kidding, right? OK, Dave may occasionally fail to paint the entire picture, but Turbeville doesn't even seem to know the game. Granted, I think most people don't realize how much better Dave and Tom are than some of these yokels calling games, but between the two of them, I'll take Dave in a heartbeat.

Twk - How's it going? Haven't seen you so I didn't know if you had to move or just job interfering with baseball stuff.

I'm taking the high road this time and not commenting on the broadcast of Aggie baseball....
