I've umpired HS baseball for 10 years and can tell you it really doesn't matter the length of the pants on where the strike zone is, but if I, as a coach, tell my player that pitch was low because it crossed the sock and not the knee I know full well that plate umpire heard me and may adjust his zone just a little bit higher.Quito said:

What does he want to wear? Let him choose. Long pants were most popular when my son was younger and that was just 10 years ago. He chose the knicker style even though he would be odd. Was the only one on most of his teams and not many in his leagues until now as they are coming back. Hunter Pence really helped him feel more confident about his choice.
PS: Mizuno knickers / pants are not durable in the knees. Easton are better. Champro are the most durable.
