Why use up our ace today and not pitch Pineda today. I would have thought you save Meng for Vandy if we make it through

If we don't win three games, we can't make the NCAA tournament. If we don't win today, we can't win three games. Pitch your best to win.
I think we stand a better chance throwing Pineda today and Meng tomorrow against Vandy's ace.
would be stupid to end our season today and leave our best pitcher on the bench.

Pineda pitched Saturday. Mengden is on short rest, Pineda would be on 2 days shorter rest.
UF has been playing terrible ball lately, but if we treat this as a gimme game, then we'll likely lose.
It's a must win, you go with the best available in any must win game.

Anybody who thinks this team has a good chance to beat Florida without our ace hasn't been paying attention this year.
Mengden is the obvious choice for this game. All other weekend starters on shorter rest. Best starter. Must win game.

Fwiw, I think Mengden should be pitching today.
I don't like throwing Mengden on short rest when we need to win 4 (don't think 3 is enough) and UF is probably the worst team we face in the tournament.
He's got as much rest as a pro pitcher does between starts. Whom would you rather see throwing today though? Long?

I still say that Mengden was the only choice for today. If we lose today, the season is over.

I like the idea of switching around your rotation in certain situations (many here are risk adverse and thats ok). But today, our ONLY other option is to go with our #4 guy. #2 and #3 are on far too short of rest.

With the situation we are in, I'm happy with playing one game at a time. The most important game is today's. Win it, then I'll worry about Vandy and the rest of the tournament. Have seen pitchers in the past come out of nowhere to play a key factor in tournaments, lets hope we get the chance for that to happen here.
Also, if we advance to the champ game on Sunday, Mengden could pitch that game. He'd be on the same amount of rest as he is for this game.
Whoever questioned starting Mengden should excuse themselves from ever posting on a sports related board!

as little as i care at this point of the season, i feel it's my duty to help share baseball strategy. "Never save a pitcher for tomorrow, tomorrow it might rain".
Always give your best the ball game 1. Allows you to use him again later on more rest if you need him. Saving him for another game doesn't give you best chance to win.

The question of if Meg would pitch a hell of a game was never in question. Its about making a regional. If we go 0-2 in our next two then who cares about today. I just think you hope Long steps up vs UF and then the gem Meg threw tomorrow he can throw vs Vandy and stand a chance there. A win vs Vandy really helps the RPI and record vs top 10/25/50 whatever stat you want to look at.

But what if he doesn't get the W vs UF? People would complain that Childress didn't throw mengden.
I think he made the right call. At this stage, you go all in.
