I was spoiled by that last FSU game. That guy had a tight zone and was consistent throughout. The ump on Sunday was just as bad as today. Way too many outside pitches called strikes.

I couldn't really tell on Sunday because I was sitting a couple sections down the third base line from the plate (directly to the back of anyone batting from the right side). But watching on TV today....yeah, that was a lot wider zone, especially on the outside edge, than in Tallahassee or any of the the other CWS games that I've watched on TV....

So why did not our pitchers take advantage of it? Was it not the same both ways?

yeah...it was getting a little ridiculous; but nothing beats the way he dismissed Juengel call for time AND the far outside strike

Our pitchers weren't getting much of anything.

While we didn't play good, its almost impossible to come back from that far down when you have to protect a plate twice the size of a normal plate.

our hitters were timid/nervous both games...

the "the strike zone was a joke" argument is okay for an inning or two, but after a while you have to get aggressive at the plate... going down 0-2 1-2 without swinging the bat and then whiffing at high fast balls is not a quality at bat

I didnt get to see the game today, but how do you get aggressive when the umpire is giving the pitcher the chalk lines?

You swing at it and you're an idiot for swinging at pitches that far out of the strike zone, but if you take it you are not aggressive.

Its easy to sit behind your keyboard at 2AM and say they need to do this or that long after the game is over, but its much harder to change 15 years worth of coaching in 1 AB to swing at pitches that are clearly balls.

Not sure about the Cal game but for SoCar the strike zone was pretty consistent other than one strike 3 call that was way outside.

It is hard to know how timid our hitters were when you are facing a USC pitcher with a 1.00 ERA and Cal's #2. Let's face it, with a wider zone, you are looking at lower scoring games.

Our pitchers should have been moving in/out and not leaving balls up in the zone.

I was sitting about 30' behind home plate and his zone wasn't that bad. Pretty consistent although he definitely gave some off the outside corner (particularly against lefties).

It would help a little if any of our bats could actually put the ball in play. And Juengel asked for timeout, but pretty late. The ump did the same thing to the FSU cleanup hitter last week in Tallahassee.

No offense Sean, but the strike zone was awful. Not that bad would mean he was calling balls just a hair outside that could go either way.

He was calling strikes that never got within 6 inches of the plate.

It wasn't bad at all until the strike 3 on Jackson in our big inning. That one was the worst I have ever seen, and from there it stayed pretty consistent.. they had a big plate and we had a caviar dish.

what mazag said.
If Wacha gets the same zone cal's pitcher got he goes deep into the game and has no problem. He had to live middle-middle and was nasty enough to do it for 4 innings, but no one can pitch like that very long. The bad part is that the ump made calls according to situation as well. definitely bailed cal out everytime A&M got anything going. Didn't hear the exchange with Juengle because I was at the game, but his body language said a lot the whole game. definately had a bias with his zone and his actions.

wacha walked 2 batters in the first inning on pitches that were clearly strikes...that is when the pitcher is feeling out the ump for the game...wacha is not an idiot...he's not going to keep walking cal batters on pitches that the ump is going to call balls...that is just stupid...this was clearly a case of a horrible ump with a horrible strike zone...the zone was way too high...he was forcing wacha to throw up in the zone all day...perfect for the cal batters...

It was a bigger factor in the South Carolina game to me! Roth got ridiculous calls on the corners and several of them were called for a strikeout looking! HUGE in a game that is tied in the 9th inning! At least 2 of these called for 3rd strike were nearly a foot off the plate!
