What was the deal with the singing of the Canadian national anthem by the fans?

Hosers.

Announcer mentioned it had to do with Canada kicking butt in the winter olympics(?). A fan then said the Noles needed to start kicking butt as well, so they began singing the anthem.

Something like that.

"It's just a tradition though, here's the story. Back in '88, the Calgary Olympics opening ceremonies took place on the same day as an FSU-Grambling baseball game. Going into the bottom of the 5th inning, with the score tied 2-2, a fan began humming O Canada. A rally began, and others joined in. Fans didn't stop humming it until the inning was over and FSU had scored 8 runs (final score was 16-3). And the tradition was born. The Animals added the Canadian flag in 1991. When Army visited a couple years ago, the Animals made it a point to contact the head coach before they came down to make him aware of it, so they didn't think we were a bunch of commies or something, ha. Anyway, thought you should know, so you're not one of the people who think we're a bunch of weirdos."

That's funny. Little traditions like that get started for really odd reasons/situations just like that. Props to the FSU fans for sticking with it.
