Decided to make a stop on the way back from vacation so my boy can get some different campus visits in. So impressed with the city, campus and the information they provided. Shouldn't be a surprise since Loftins in charge. Considering all this plus the national ranking and the seemingly grande canyon difference in admission requirements vs A&M its no surprise MU is a huge draw for kids from Texas (provided you can foot out of state tuition)

Out of all of the schools I've traveled to for football games, Mizzou was by far the worst. All other schools, including LSU, were very hospitable. Mizzou folks were very rude, very liberal. Lots of northern tendencies. Columbia didn't impress me at all. Not looking forward to going back to a game there.

Huh, that surprises me. We spent the night and didnt get that feeling on campus at all. Never been to a game there though. I wouldn't think its liberal being in Missouri and smack in the heartland.

Has anyone else heard this is a liberal school?

As for their admission requirements, I dont have the specifics in front of me, but their ACT/SAT and class ranking requirements are much more favorable than what we face trying to get into A&M. Because we are at a very competitive public school, its going to be tough getting in that top 10% requirement.

Traveled to Mizzou as a BQ in the early 2000s. It was one of my favorite trips. Pretty campus, pretty co-eds. I didn't think their fans were hostile at all. I wouldn't say they were as nice and welcoming as OU and Ok. State fans were, but nothing like Tech or Iowa State (it really surprised me how ridiculous the Iowa State fans were. We had food thrown at us while we waiting behind the end zone prior to half time in Ames.)

My son was admitted to Mizzou. They are pushing hard to get put of state kids, especially Illinois. If you live there for a summer, you qualify for in state tution. We went to the game there in 2013. Nothing bad, but no warm and fuzzies. It was also a huge win for them. I don't mind seeing them rotate off the schedule.

The tour was the best tour we went on. Did a good job of selling the school . They also gave you lunch, which was a big selling point.

Kansas and Lawrence seemed more liberal than Mizzou.

McInnis, is your kid at Missouri or where did they decide to go? I'd really like to consider UM if A&M doesn't work out for my kid.

Only liberal parts of the state are inner city StL and KC. Rest of the state is not very liberal though more liberal than A&M but few aren't. Long time ago I spent time at both and my wife and most of my friends up here are Mizzou grads.

Large Greek university. I will say that there tends to be more of a grunge element than when I was there. Ole Miss reminds me of how Mizzou used to be. Last summer I was down at Arkansas and thought that was much more liberal.

Good journalism, liberal arts, business, and engineering school, though UM-Rolla is the true engineering school. Old Missouri School of Mines.

Hey, women's winter wear is nothing to be upset with. And also, you get late spring through early fall lake of the ozarks fun out there with those Mizzou women.

I went to grad school at Mizzou. It's a great place. The only knock (and perhaps the reason others might not have enjoyed it) is that it's not set-up well for tailgating. The campus is gorgeous, and downtown Columbia is a lot of fun. 2 hr drive to both STL and KC are also positives.

I graduated high school in Florida (and live outside Orlando now), but new I wanted to go to A&M after I did fall semester of 10th grade at Longview High School.

Spring break my senior year, my mom and I drove to CS for me to do Spend the Night With the Corps. On the way back, we swung up north to see Mom's sister in Oxford, MS. Mom and the aunt insisted on taking me to the Ole Miss campus, since that's where they both went (although, strangely, neither graduated from there. My mom finished her degree at ACU; my aunt finished at Harding). We went on the campus tour, and at the end I asked, "where's the rest of it?"

Pretty campus, but dang it was small. How does Mizzou compare to A&M in size?

It's about at 60% of A&M's size, with a total enrollment of 35,000.

Do people really.make college choices based on the quality of banquet lunch served on a tour?

Is that any more arbitrary than basing their decision on the amount/quality of trim? Some dudes may just prefer food over you know what....

Kawasaggie,

Take a look at Oklahoma State University. Without going into a lot of details, my daughter will be a freshman there next year. OSU is giving her a lot of scholarship money for her ACT scores. She will be the Salutatorian of her high school class, and A&M would offer her nothing in terms of scholarships.

We went and toured the campus the Friday of the OSU vs. KSU match up and attended the game. I went and tried to not be critical/cynical of the school and the tour, and did my best to be 100% objective about it all. After having gone, I can say that the entire experience of the tour, the facilities, the beauty of the campus, and the friendliness of the students and alumni we met were all very impressive. OSU/Stillwater offer a conservative school and community that I feel good about sending my daughter to.

When we were driving home from Stillwater that Sunday, I told my daughter that while I would still prefer she attend A&M, if she chose somewhere else to go to college, my preference would be that she go to Oklahoma State.

Your kid can go just about anywhere in the state of Texas for 2 semesters, maintain a B avg, and transfer right in to A&M.

If they can swallow their pride for a year, it's worth doing. ...and you wont have to pay out of state to a school they had to settle for.

Mmh, I completely agree. I went to SHSU for 3 semesters and I was able to transfer in fairly easily with a 2.9 . I'm sorry, but OSU is not in the same league as A&M. Neither is Mizzou.

Yep, I am learning more ways to make it work all the time. Thanks for the reminder.
