How long do you want to ignore this user?

Howdy! This is my first time posting. I'm a class of '84 Aggie living in California. I have a son who is a sophomore at A&M.

My daughter is a junior in high school and looking at colleges. A&M doesn't have the major for her.

She wants to be a speech therapist (masters) and minor in vocal performance.

She would like a friendly, conservative school with football like A&M, but smaller and with performing arts. She doesn't like the California colleges, and she doesn't want a big city.

I was thinking she should look into Baylor, Auburn, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

She actually liked North Texas. It was very friendly when we visited.

Any suggestions, comments would be appreciated.

I think LSU has that major. She should take a visit to the campus.

what do you mean "She wants to be a speech therapist (masters) and minor in vocal performance. "

Are you saying that she wants to get her undergrad and in speech therapy and then go on to get her masters?

She can get her undergrad anywhere I believe. Speech pathology is a Masters program. The 2012 list of the best speech pathology programs in the country can be found here.

Lot of good football schools on that list.

My fiance is a speech therapist/pathologist/whatever.

She got her undergrad at Texas and her masters at Northwestern. She and all of her friends seem smart. That's about all I can offer.

She can get her undergrad in anything, but there are a lot of prerequisite classes she needs to take for th masters. If she gets the prerequisites in undergrad, then her mater's won't take as long.

She may may major in something like communication disorders with a minor in vocal performance. She could also major in special ed. She'll figure that out later.

Texas is off the list for many reasons. She wants to look at Arizona. She didn't like the feel of Baylor. It wasn't very friendly when she visited.

I know she wants a college town atmosphere, and I don't know which colleges have that.

I think we can only afford about 2 trips, so we're trying to get the closest matches.

Fiancé asked if your daughter was bilingual. She recommended going to a public undergrad with an eye to a private masters. Just glancing at that list, Wisconsin is certainly a good college town atmosphere.

Well I am biased having graduated from Auburn, but you and your daughter should make Auburn one of your trips.

They have the degree programs she is looking for and she will get the atmosphere she wants. Great small college town, football, traditions. There are a lot of parallels between TAMU and AU.

My wife is an SLP and she got both of her degrees from Lamar which apparently has a very highly rated program for that major. Not sure if true but I usually just nod my head when the wife says that. It seems to work better than my original response, the mocking laugh.

Back in the day, Lamar was a respected school. Good engineering college. This was thirty years ago, though.

Nothing wrong with UNT. My wife did the college tour around Texas and enjoyed UNT the most.
