Gary Pinkel not impressing with the results from his first two games. Toledo looked to be a fair match for that team for much of the game.

Schedule is brutal but I think they start 5-0 and win one of their tough 3 (uga, uf, usc).

They will have a better season than Vandy.
hmm surely they can win 1 of the next 3.

Pinkel is a good coach who has led MU to one of their more successful stretches of football in school history. Last year was a perfect **** storm with injuries mixed in. They beat up that "scrappy" Vandy team last night. I don't expect them to top Georgia, USC or even Florida this year, but they're not going to be a perpetual bottom feeder either.

Pinkel runs a decent program but is well known as a poor gameday coach. He did well against a watered down Big 12 North but has been pantsed in bowl games, for instance.

Whoa. That game featured some home cooking and still wasn't close.

Started 5-0. Already won one of big 3. Schedule is brutal but I am still confident that they will have a better season than Vandy.

Bottom line: Pinkel saved his job. Long-term, still tough sledding for Mizzou, now that they are mostly locked out of Texas recruiting.

Mizzou's recruiting strategy will be one to watch. The staff effort expended on Texas has been moved to the Southeast.

Officially off the hot-seat. When his team is healthy it is a legit player in the East.

Bad gameday coach in over his head with bad players on a team that "might" be better than Kentucky and that will take a beating is off to a pretty good start.

At this point Dick Muschamp's seat is probably warmer than Pinkel's. He just got outgained 500 to 150 yards at home by a Big 12 North team.

Pinkel had a lot of changes forced on him this offseason, and they are working. He may be learning a thing or two.

He's letting someone he didn't train run his offense, for example.

They were banged up last year, oline and qb. The heat came from DUI, divorce from alleged affair etc. winning cures it all.

there's been a lot more changed than the injured reserve list, aggiediehard. Dead on about the other sources of heat, though. Put him in a pickle with respect to his buyout clause, and that was likely mentioned when staff and approach changes were brought up to him after the season.

"Bad" gameday coach proving he can do more with less against top tier competition... #5 team in the nation heading into their final home game. Not bad for being in so far over his head.

He had to be told to let his coordinators do a lot more.

The running backs have gotten the ball far more than they have under Pinkel in many years. If you don't recognize that, you haven't been watching the games. Pinkel's gameday coaching has changed because he and his hand-picked and personally trained Yost aren't calling things.

Ok to admit you're wrong, bud.

Not in the least. Wholesale staff changes were made on the offensive side of the ball. Fired the old OC (yeah, he 'resigned'), new receivers coach and the old receivers coach went to QBs and bore down on them.

You're as clueless here as you have been on Rivalries, Shelby. Must be you.

Not in the least. Pinkel fought against the staff changes (firing Yost). He has been proven wrong. Henson (the new OC) is his first coordinator he didn't bring from Toledo, and it was a forced change.

Carter isn't acknowledging any of that. The significant change in the team is the offense - it has changed how the defense can play and it is more effective in its own right.

I am guessing carter is a Mizzou fan, some of whom also refuse to admit the truth about the difference from this year to last.

I note you didn't comment on the fact that you've long been exposed as an idiot on Rivalries. You're just doing it here now.

Looks like when Henson got the go-ahead to run it worked. Gary still has to stay out of his own way.

Oops!

material ag's creative writing was decent fiction. He seems to know quite a bit more than big-wig program insiders. Wholesale staff changes? Nope. Good stuff.

Oops, yes, new OC, new QB coach (was receivers) and new receivers coach. That's wholesale staff changes in everyone's book but an apologist.

Even Strauss notes the effect in the Post-Dispatch:

quote:
If Pinkel (or ousted offensive coordinator Dave Yost) was arrogant enough last season to believe the frantic, holdover offensive scheme would translate within the SEC, he has shown himself adaptable enough to embrace a new environment that still values time of possession, field position and ball security.
