Keep hearing that Gary Pinkel is on the hot seat at Mizzou. You think if he has another bad year they should get rid of him, or should Mizzou ride out the storm until the SEC $$$ starts paying off with upgrades to facilities?

i don't see why you wouldn't get rid of him afer another down year. With Florida/UGA/USCe top dogs and Tennessee probably rising and Kentuckys recruiting (oh and don't forget Franklin leads a pretty scrappy Vandy team). Mizzou is on the fast track to bottom of the barrel in the sec east if not the SEC as a whole. He needs 8 wins with a decent bowl win. The future for Mizzou doesn't look bright, imo

Pinkel, and Missouri, are in way over their head in the SEC.

Pinkel has been on the hot seat almost from the day he was hired. But like a cat, he has nine lives.

Every time he has been on the verge of being fired he pulls out a big win, gets lucky with a QB that turns out to be better than average, etc.

He has won ju.....st enough to keep his job - so far. But I think he's used up 8 of his 9 lives.

I seem to recall seeing this happen at another well know school as well. And it didn't have a happy ending.

I think they went into the SEC and got their ass kicked like everybody thought we would. They had a ton of injuries.....give him more time. He brought their program a long way back in the Big 12. (With Texas recruits, albeit. The only problem I have with him is his change of focus on not recruiting in Texas anymore. He could sell Mizzou as playing in the SEC to Texas kids, and he's gone away from that, which I think will be proven an error in judgement.)

Their bread and butter is Texas recruits. Almost 40% of their teams over the past decade have come from Texas. And their star players - greater percentage. Recruiting wise you can say "we're in the SEC now" all you want but Texas Mamas don't get to see their boys play without a plane flight or every third year when they play the Aggies.

Mizoo is toast.

Schedule is brutal but I think they start 5-0 and win one of their tough 3 (uga, uf, usc).

They will have a better season than Vandy.

Pinkel is a good coach that turned that program around. He should get at least 2 more years in the SEC.

Their fans did not seem as excited as we were about the SEC. Of course they would have had to be Sheet bat crazy to have been as excited as we were and are.

Remember how cocky he was before the season last year

If they have the same record as last year, I think he's toast. He really needs a big win over someone like Georgia.

He should get some lee-way due to his turning that program around, but I think he lost a lot of that good will when the whole narrative coming into the SEC was "Mizz is gonna probably do alright and A&M is going to struggle at first."

I still believe Mizz is quietly sending the BiG 10 love letters.

I have it on very good source that Pinkel is on a very hot seat. First for on field performance and second for his own actions.

If you look back, their schedule was pretty brutal last year. They beat a UCF team that went 10-4 and won a bowl game, an Arizona St team that went 8-5 and won a bowl game, lost to a Syracuse team that went 8-5 and beat the piss outta West Virginia in their bowl game, then had to play the SEC East, including on the road at Florida, at South Carolina, and at Tennessee. Then from the West, they had to play Alabama and at A&M. It's actually pretty remarkable they were in bowl contention on the last week of the season.

^^^ truth about their schedule, plus they had a terrible injury bug last season.

they are not beating UGA, UF, or SCar. They might be better than Kentucky.

If Pinkel has to win this year to keep his job, the Missouri AD can go ahead and start interviewing replacements because Missouri will take a beating

Their problem is that they really have no recruiting base. The idea they were going to come in and be better than us in football long term was a laughable joke all along, though the national media didn't seem to realize it. They are a solid basketball add though.

Mizzou played the toughest schedule in the country last year with Bama, A&M, UGA, SC, and UF. Somehow, someway, their recruiting needs to get a lot better. I don't know if a coaching change helps recruiting, but they've got to do better. It doesn't appear that focusing on Georgia and Florida recruiting has worked out well.

Never quite understood their recruiting problems, which I am well aware of (lived in the St Louis area for 7+ years).

St Louis and KC produce some quality players every year. For some reason they don't usually stay in state.

Mizzou did have a pretty good football tradition back in the day with some pretty damned good coaches (Dan Devine for one).

AginMO has it dead on. Pinkel's seat is white-hot.

He's a pretty decent program manager and a poor gameday coach. He capitalized on a couple good coincidences (the expiration of grandfathered Big 8 academic entrance requirements greatly reducing NU and KSU respectively, Mizzou learning football is important to their alumni relations and admissions, Mizzou seeing itself as a program in a similar situation as U. of Washington and interested in a Don James program (Stull and then Pinkel)) and hit that place at a good time ... then got lucky with Daniel. He runs a good player development program and they've put enough kids in the NFL to attract some defensive players (more than you might think).

However, changing their recruiting over from Texas to SEC takes time, and in the meanwhile, exposes that he is an awful gameday coach. The bad coaching plus some laughable personal mistakes have made it easier and easier to recruit against him, notable by the reinvigoration of Nebraska's recruiting in Missouri. Rumor is he's gone by Christmas, because no one thinks he's really going to get this done this year.

This is not entirely accurate. And no, there is no attempt to meddle with the Big 10 whatsoever. That bridge is burned to a stump.

In the long term maybe the move to the SEC helps as maybe they can keep the StL players that tend to lean to the Big 10 and the KC players that look to Iowa, Nebraska, and K State.

I have met Pinkel a couple of times and he is a good guy to hang out with but the winning kept some of the personal stories quiet that losing does not. Plus a number of former players have some very negative feelings toward him (both stars and role players).

Mizzou is in an odd place and quite frankly I don't see anyone outside of Urban Meyer, Saban, etc that could really create any real excitement ther and we know that is not happening.

On a side note, most Illinois fans are still disappointed that they did not get Sumlin.

My understanding, as well. He's also made some strategic errors, and his gameday coaching and personal issues have made it easier and easier to recruit against him. He used the good fortune of that 2007 team to get some better recruits, and topped out in 2010 ... but game film and a frank discussion about the lack of development on the offensive side of the ball and defensive backs have also increased recruiting vulnerabilities, and that's something you can't have at a place like Missouri. The location, setting, and renewed capital commitments should make them able to run a nice program along the lines of Va. Tech, and they will need to hire a different coach to capitalize on that potential IMHO.
