Arky picks up Bielema.
Auburn picks up Malzahn.

I think if Malzahn can pick up a good DC, they could be very good in a couple years (obviously provided the NCAA doesn't drop the hammer on AU)

Every single couch in our division is a big name.

Saban
Sumlin
Miles
Freeze
Malzahn
Mullen
Bielema

Wow.

Auburn's got problems beyond the coaching situation. Malzahn may be a good hire, but he's got some hurdles to clear.

Beilema to Arkansas is a head scratcher. Have to believe it will take him some time to get the personnel he needs to run his offense, but maybe he can turn them into a respectable defense next year. This guy was complaining about recruiting against Urban Meyer at OSU--how's he going to do in a conference with 13 other coaches as aggressive as Meyer?

Mullen, Freeze, and this new dude are "big names"?

Uh, no.

SEC will always have big time coaches for the best conference in football.

Wisconsin isn't a state oozing with blue chip talent. I think one of the reasons why Arkansas chose him is that he can do a lot with mediocre recruiting classes which is the kind of talent expected in Arkansas in relation to the neighboring states of TX, LA, and MS. The Razorbacks already have a bunch of big bodies on offense to run his type of offense. The players will just have to learn a new philosophy.

I think Bielema was a solid hire, aside from the fact that I'm still learning to consistently spell his name right. He'll build them from the lines up, which the right way to go about it. Less talent in the Big 10 region than the SEC region.

Freeze may not be a big name yet, but he will be in the next couple years. Great coach.

Malzahn is a hot name, not a big name. Freeze is not a big name. Bielema is not really a big name, per se, but a good coach.

Auburn is in serious trouble here. I'm not sure Malzahn can fix it all. Defense is in shambles.

Also, I think Arkansas has to be pretty far behind in recruiting for probably this year and next.

Nothing has changed. Different faces in places but same results next year.

Dude obviously both of those schools could very easily be good next year! Arkansas fell to pieces without a coach but were still top 3 in our league 2 years running and poised to make the run that we did; they obviously have the athletes to do it. Auburn was also expected to be better than us preseason because of their athleticism. Don't sleep on either of these teams; a good coach could do with them exactly what KDS did with us this year! It's gonna be interesting

Bielema will be a catastrophic failure. Running the power I works ok against bad talent. Trying to run against strong d lines and outscore hunh offense will be comical.

But I give Malzahn a 50/50 shot to win the west. An elite coach with elite talent has to prosper.

What's comical is that you think that. NFL would like to have a word

So you're comparing Arkie oline which starts two walkons to the NFL. Now THAT's comical!!!!

Re read your post.
Teams in CFB and NFL run the power I against strong D lines all the time.

The more you know...

bad is a relative term. There are no mismatches in the nfl off olines and dlines as there are between arky and nearly every d-1 team.

Bielema benefitted from having a weak Michigan and Ohio State during his tenure. He left at the perfect time. It is also why I thought Narduzzi would leave Mich State last year, with Urban taking the gig and Hoke rebuilding Michigan into a power, there is a definitive cieling for Narduzzi in East Lansing. He is finding out the hard way now, and will be out of a job in three years or less when Dantonio gets let go. It is similar to our run in the late 1990s when texas and Oklahoma were trash. We found out how good our coach really was when he had to face elite level staffs that demanded excellence from themselves and their players.

I expect Bielema to have Arkansas bowl eligible, but nothing more.

Go over to Hogville and read some of their predictions.

quote:
Arkansas by all indications is going to have a coaching staff that is second to none.

quote:
If Saban goes to the Browns (unlikely) then all hell will break loose for the top of the SEC West. Arkansas, A&M, LSU, Auburn, and Alabama will all have a legitimate shot at it.

quote:
Its about to be Bama, LSU, A&M & Arkansas battling it out.

Most of them have no clue how f'd they are now.

Good post Bonfire.

I don't think Bielema is a bad coach. Wisky took a sig step backwards this year as they lost Paul Chryst (OC) to Pitt and more importantly Russell Wilson (who IMO played as good as Luck & RG3 at times last year). I think Ark hired as a good of a coach as they could expect to come there.
