Can't believe this hasn't been said already, but Dr Slive & Co. aren't interested in added more (right now) BUT if they do, they aren't interested in adding a school in a state where there is already a SEC school. And yes, that very much includes the horns.
quote:
#1 UNC + UVA
#2 NCST + VT
#3 OU + KU
Here is why this is closest to correct (but I think #2 is more likely than #1:
1. It is apparent most folks on this board don't understand how schools get paid via their conference via the TV/media contracts via the distributors.
a. First, the SEC only needs ONE school in any given state to reap the $$ from cable distributors.
b. It doesn't matter how many fans of that school are in that given state; it only matters how many people get/subscribe to cable.
2. Based on the above, most of the lists or schools listed as "locks" or wants won't even be considered by the SEC. SEC has Texas via A&M and doesn't need or want any other Texas school.
3. There are "package deals" that states put on their schools, much more so than the supposed A&M/horn deal. OU/OSU, KU/KSU would be very difficult to split up and to get one, SEC would probably have to take both. Therefore, not likely this will happen, but stranger things have. As such, #3 above is last as it should be.
4. UNC is the heart and soul of the ACC; VA isn't far behind and perhaps equal to FSU. That said, prying them BOTH away would be very difficult (IMHO). IF one, VA; which would be great for the SEC.
5. NCST and VT aren't considered the same as the three schools above. VT is better in football than any ACC team except FSU (recently). Considering what VT had to do to get into the ACC, it might be hard to pry them out. Out of all the schools, I think NCST jumps first without question. Not as sexy as UNC, but decent nonetheless. VT is more like us than any school over there (other than perhaps Clemson). Clemson is out because USCe is in. I still think it's easier for SEC to get VT and NCST and gain two more states in our footprint. EDIT: FSU is out because Florida is already in. And before anybody says anything about FSU being better at football than VT; VT didn't join the ACC till '03.
Just my .02. If I had my druthers, I'd love to see us (SEC) pickup UNC and VT.
