Am I the only one who thinks Ole Miss should pull a Southwest Texas and start going by "University of Mississippi"?

Ole Miss sounds old and bourgeois. From a marketing standpoint it seems horrible...especially given its origin.

Umm I've never really consciously thought about it, but now that I am I think I agree with OP.

The difference is that Ole Miss actually is formally "The University of Mississippi" (the "Ole Miss" nickname originally stemming from slave lingo), whereas Texas State University - San Marcos actually changed its name from Southwest Texas State University.

Their mascot is the Rebels and you think that "Ole Miss" is their marketing problem?

I knew Dixie would be in this discussion!

My buddy next to me at the Ole Miss game asked one of their (inebriated) fans if he should call them the Rebels or if he should call them the Bears. Dude got PISSED.

Very proud folks. The band plays Dixie and the fans sing along before the game.
