I know it depends on his pro game schedule but if we can choose any game which would it be?

Is it obviously the tu game?

i think the no-brainer would be t.u. but we also have to remember acie will have a bit of a schedule to work around

We don't. Acie's awesome, but there are a ton of recruits that want to wear #1.

Where have you been your whole life? Have you ever looked into tradition? Have you ever noticed that in every sport played at Texas A&M, not 1 jersey hase been retired?

Please don't tell me you think Acie was the best athlete ever to compete for A&M, that would just be ignorant.

So he gets a statue right where tfkc would have been.

Whether it is retired or not, I'd like to see his jersey hanging in Reed Arena.

if this ever happens it'll be a long time from now... i've never heard of somebody's number being retired the year after they graduate... florida state just retired Bob Sura's number this year... and his career with the rockets is already over

Question: Has A&M ever retired anyone's number?

Crow won the Heisman and # 44 is still active.

I don't see why we start retiring numbers. A&M is by all means "A Unique American Institution"...it's about the sum, not the parts.

We could have an "honor banner" or something hanging from the rafters. Or something similar to what the Dallas Cowboys do.

Keep A&M unique.

I agree with tyman. It probably won't ever happen. Acie has been an amazing basketball player. Arguably the best in A&M history. But we've had other great players in the past (Vernon, Bernard, etc.) that haven't had their numbers retired.

Switching sports, we've even had Heisman and Lombardi winners. We just don't retire numbers.

I say retire it.

Screw this "we've never retired one before!" nonsense.

We haven't had a good enough player to do it yet.

Won't happen.

Nothing to see here.

Move on.

Wow, I am shocked there is even discussion on if it should happen.

Thought this was a no brainer.

Well, the guys that think his number should not be retired, I am not sure what a player would have to do to get the honor in your book then.

I have seen players at Duke do similar things if not less and get their numbers retired and I would assume it is harder to get it done there.

Being an All-American is hardly justification for retiring a jersey.

Excellence First ...

I don't think we retire the jersey next year. I think the best thing to do is to wait a few years and see where we are. If what he started truly is a basketball renaissance and we are still a dominant program in five to ten years, then we hang a banner in his honor, because his significance reaches far beyond his four years on campus. In my opinion, that is what will have made him a legend.

However, I don't think the number should be retired, just some sort of banner hanging from the rafters.

XL2,

I think he did just a bit more than be a 1st team all american but if you lack the vision to see it, your problem.

I think we should create a "ring of honor" type thing and hang great players' jersey's around the concourse of Reed. Maybe not necessarily retire the number but do what KU does and put the jersey's on display. That inner wall of the concourse needs some decoration anyway. I'd like to see the inaugural class be Sonny Parker, Bernard King, and Acie Law IV.

my best guess is never...

think of some of the elite recruits who want to wear #1, guarantee that would turn them off a little..
Dallasag02
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Thats why you don't retire it, you just hang it up, much like Bobinator suggested.

Duke retired JJ Reddick's jersey this past season.

Yeah but Reddick was at Duke for like 8 seasons.

There should be a banner in the rafter with "LAW IV" "1" and "All-American" on it.

There should also be a player on the court wearing #1.

New Army lives at Reed Arena

I'd like to see BJ Holmes grab that #1 Jersey

Duke retired Williams last season as well.

Ring of honor, retired number, whatever but I do think you do it sooner than later.

I think this would help recruiting. Kids would see that they have a chance to be honored forever at A&M if they are an elite player.

Also helps show ATM's past basketball history that you can be an all-american at A&M.

I am not sure if Texas has criteria they have to follow, but it has always been if you are named Player of the Year, in basketball you get your jersey retired. Hence TJ Fords number is hanging in the rafters and Durant's will be right next to his.

I think football, a Hesiman trophey would be a reason to retire the jersey (which Texas seems to follow, what will they do for Vince?), but I know Texas also uses numbers as an honor...i.e. its an honor for a linebacker to wear #60 (Nobis) as D.J. wore the number in his final home game.

I believe Texas has only retired four jerseys in any sport...(Durant will get one, and I think they will work something in for Vince, but if they dont, no one will wear #10 again anyways)

TJ's #5
Roger Clemens' #22
Earl's #20
Ricky's #34
