The problem to me isnt lack of a jumbotron...its the complete lack of a hustleboard. Showing my only the pts and fouls of players currently in the game doesnt cut it.

bgrimm..maybe so. And you are correct in saying I know knothing about structural design or contruction.

What I do know is basketball arenas. I know that if you build a basketball arena/multipurpose facility that cant handle a center scoreboard then you have cut corners and built a cheap ass facility. Can you name me any arena (not a small fieldhouse) like that DOESNT have the capability to add such a scoreboard???
bgrimm05
How long do you want to ignore this user?
no, i can't. that's why i think the scoreboard thing would probably work. but i can see us as the ones to build that cheap ass facility you speak of.

the scorboard is a POINT LOAD right in the weakest part of the structure.

Wrong. The load is distributed through the scaffolding/support structures, and it ends up being supported by multiple point loads at the attach points...not 1 massive point load. Call me when you actually get your degree...or at least complete ENGR201-205.

There are very few people in your situation. Most of the seats in Reed are within comfortable eyesight of the big scoreboard. I understand your issue, although I never sat in the blind spot area.
My point is more that 95% of the jumbotron complainers are in plain view of the big scoreboard. This is not a flame, I honestly don't understand what the big deal is for those people. What is it that a jumbotron will provide that the big scoreboard isn't?

WRONG! I had trouble seeing that crappy little scoreboard at the Clemson game last week, and I was "in plain view of the BIG scoreboard" - but at the far end of the building. It is too small, and frankly, it is inadequate. If we were a 5A highschool, I'd be fine with it. But we are Texas A&M damnit! Let's act like it and get a proper scoreboard!!!

bgrimm05,
Although you presented an argument that sounded really nice and pretty for all the people that aren't educated in structures, it is flawed as was pointed out above. If the entire scoreboard structure was attached to a single beam that runs the entire span without any other beams attaching to it to provide support, then it is treated as a point load. Otherwise, the load is distributed through all the other supporting beams and hangers.

Next time don't pay so much attention in ENGR 221 and play with the bridge-builder software like everybody else.

The one valid point you did raise was that it isn't as simple as just attaching the whole thing with a few cables and bolts. They will have to re-analyze the safety factors to make sure they fall within the legal code limits. However, with the link i provided above, the system can support 50 tons of rigging. The new scoreboards aren't solid, they're mearly frames that hold the video boards. If you ever see pics from a game looking up, the boards are usually hollow for the most part.

BCG needs to demand in his contract extension:

1. University/AD control over Reed.
2. A REAL scoreboard.
3. Shutters for lights (for quick return of lights after dark into)
4. Laser optics for dark intro
5. LED O-Ring video around upper level
6. Landscaping! Or at least one tree per side of the building!

...and now for the lighter side.

I was around 10 when the Astrodome was built. I had a souvenier program from it's opening. At one point during the construction when the dome was up but not the walls they were very afraid the sufficient wind would elevate the entire dome and send it off like a gigantic ufo!

are we talking about the same rafters that collapsed during construction?

The rafters collapsed because a load-bearing crane fell into the them.

ok, for some of you that take everything completely literally, there is no such thing as a true point load. a true point load is infinately thin and all of the force is placed upon that point. but in engineering and construction any load that is concentrated on a relatively small area is considered a point load. in this case, the weight is put on the areas near the center of the couple of beams the scoreboard would be hanging from, not the ENTIRE roof structure. for example, when a building is designed to support a large a/c rooftop unit, extra joists and reinforcement is put in place beneath the unit. there can be no argument there. if you want i can go into our office plan room and show drawing after drawing where extra reinforcement is placed in the roof structure. why would this be any different? when there is an added load on a particular area, there MUST and i repeat MUST be added reinforcement. maybe it's there, maybe it's not. i haven't seen the structural drawings for reed arena. but hey, with new technology i'm sure they can make these scorboards pretty light. the eight flat screens at reliant stadium are huge, but there is not much to them other than the actual screens so i would imagine the structure is very light. and yes, i've seen the video of the collapse and it wasn't because of it's own weight. reed arena's not collapsing right now under it's own weight either. we are talking about added loads (the crane hitting it would be considered a live load like wind whereas a scorboard is dead load).

The center video scoreboard is needed to add respectability to the program. The only school I know of at respective level that doesn't have one is Notre Dame. A Duke can afford to not have one, we can't...

Please tell me you don't really believe this.

I think a center scoreboard would be great; obviously a system like that would be superior to what we have. However, I couldn't care less if they ended up having one in Reed, because I don't go to Reed to watch TV.
To take it as far as questioning our "respectability" if we don't have a jumbotron shows a lack of understanding of how a basketball program gains respect.
In 2 years, we'll be a highly respected program, jumbotron or no.

Forget the trees, already. With trees come grackles. With grackles come grackle doodee. There's already enough of that on west campus.

i don't like trees because they attract birds that crap on everything which is why we should cut them all down.

I haven't been inside, but the outside puts Reed to shame.

The engineers/engr majors in this thread arguing about loads should be able to solve the tree situation if you ever had a class with Dr. Beason over statics and dynamics. Maybe he walked over and gave his input when Reed was being built and conveyed to them his views on trees. ...if you havent had Beason, you won't know what the heck i am talking about.

Do any of you remember that the building of Reed was delayed several times and then finally down-sized by the building committee which is in austin? The board, as I remember it, was/is controlled by sips. We're lucky to have it I guess, but now what happens when it's too small to hold everyone that wants to attend basketball games? In light of the history of Reed it's high irony that we're aparently being denied a scoreboard by our own administration.

The new arena being built in Katy is a perfect example of why we sold our house. Our house payment was increasing $100 a year due to school taxes. They simply don't need these facilties. BTW, go look at the new school on Saums road, complete with a "fine arts wing". Give me a break. This is just another way for the liberals to extract $ from the taxpayer. I don't think that the buildings on campus are funded the same way.

The board in the middle may not be a point load but it's still placing a load in the center of a perimeter supported structure. Whatever the rigging capacity is depends on the placement of the various loads. Center capacity is going to be less than an evenly distributed load. As others have said they cut the budget on Reed from the original plan big time and it may in fact not have been built strong enough for a center court board.

I think a center scoreboard definitely adds respectability to our program. Keep in mind, some of these kids come from big-time high school programs. If they have been playing at a facility in high school with a center scoreboard (which is becoming more & more prevalent), they are going to walk into Reed Arena & laugh. I find it comical that all we ever talked about was getting our butts handed to us in football recruiting because of the facilities & yet we don't take the same stand on basketball recruiting.

Lets buy the hanging score board at old reunion arena. The blue and green colors along with the old mavericks logo will look great in an all maroon arena.
