Honest question: why would it?

I get the knee-jerk reaction to a bad game from the football team but how does football have any impact on basketball recruiting?

It's a reasonable question and I don't have an answer other than people like being associated with a winning overall athletic program. Not that our's isn't but it could possibly create a negative impression as opposed to if the results were reversed . I agree it would be a short sighted reaction but sometimes teenagers do that .

I think of it like this , you're graduating in your major, you were top of your class , and you're entertaining offers from different employers. Sure the specific job and offers matter but all other things being equal would you lean towards a company/employer with an overall winning track record or one that's …. Historically not as stellar. I don't think it's nearly as important as how you liked the coaches/recruiters , overall experience , and your overall view of an opportunity but still might be a consideration.

If he lived in like Seattle and this was the only visit he was going to take it could play in a little bit because the crowd for a 2:30 game in September when we get shoved around the field doesn't exactly give you that "magical night" feeling, but he's already been here before and I'm sure he'll be here a few more.

Let me put it this way: has a university's football team had a discernible impact on it's basketball team's recruiting? Here are some teams to give food for thought:

Duke
UConn
Kentucky
UCLA
Arkansas

OR, flipping it the other way, successful football programs with mediocre bb programs:

Ohio State
Clemson
Georgia
Alabama, until recently

All that to say, I think it is silly to consider a football team's success or failure having any noticeable impact on the basketball team's recruiting.

Nobody thinks one program impacts the recruiting of another in a broad sense, but it's not THAT crazy to think that a specific player's visit might have been impacted by a single game outcome.

That said, losing a football game isn't going to give a basketball recruit a negative visit.

I think the only way a football outcome can really affect our basketball recruiting is at the other end of the spectrum. There's just no denying that there's something special about winning a big game at Kyle Field, there are VERY few spectacles like it in sports. So when we have big recruits from other sports at those kinds of games, I think it can have a decent positive impact, but us losing doesn't have any substantial negative one.

I think your'e basically right and maybe the better way to put it would have been "too bad the football team didn't play better on his visit to optimize his experience ".
