Man, im excited about his improvement. Reminded me of Cooper Flag tonight. Some switch flipped and he realized he was 6'11 and is allowed to rebound and score. On top of his scoring, his motor has kicked up 3 gears since January.

Excited to have him back next year!

I was probably the least excited about his commitment from this portal class. I'm so impressed by how he's played.

I've said this multiple times if there ever was a kid who went to a program based on their history it was Zach. The style at KU was not for him. Him with another year here and and a healthy Mac will be fun. He is gonna keep growing as a player this system works great for his game and he can shoot.

It's also a testament to the coaching staff on finding him and seeing the potential in him. Kansas prolly ruined any confidence he had but you can see it growing every game.

The coaches gave him the minutes and opportunities to develop. He was allowed to play through his mistakes and get better. Whenever this happens the results are good. Players show more belief in themselves when coaches show belief in them. It's good to see the offensive development…defensive development should be next if there is potential for it to also improve.

I agree he has a ways to go on defense, but Ive seen some pretty impressive leaps compared to where he was, even in January.

We've heard coach in press conferences talk a lot about the importance of continuity. I think he's sincere about making that happen with returners.

I'm pretty sure Zach is a grad transfer. I was under the impression that grad transfers don't get an additional year of eligibility without a medical redshirt. Does Zach have any avenue towards extending his eligibility?

It's been reported that a season of eligibility remains due to medical redshirt during an injured 2024-25 season that would grant a six season of basketball for the former Jayhawks' forward.

Yeah I've seen staff say he can come back

The next question becomes, can we keep him with all his late season improvements?

Eligibility has nothing to do any more with graduation or courses or even going to class.
You can play as many years as your want until you have had nothing more than a cold during the season, and even that would probably be considered a medical condition.

Love it or hate it the coaching staff lets the team in general play through mistakes. Sometimes it's an 18-0 run but you also force them to mentally accept you're not going to get bailed out when something doesn't go your way.

We will lose games because of this. You might be able to argue it really hurt us last night in fact.. although in the moment I think everyone knew a timeout wasn't going to keep Arkansas from breaking our press or making those hard buckets. But in general a huge run can bury you.

But we also battled back repeatedly on a night it felt like we had no business hanging around. Arkie needed a guy to go nuclear to keep them from going into panic mode. And that's on a night when two guys did 90% of the work.

I love thinking long term and Bucky really seems to have that in mind. ZC coming along is part of that.

This year is absolutely about finding what works in the sec and what doesn't work and what players we have to keep for next year and who needs to leave.
The victories are just icing.

Ill eat some crow here, I figured he would give us nothing this year. I think he has gained a ton of confidence and curious to see what he looks like after an offseason with his new gained confidence.

Honestly, he could be a future NBA guy. He has come a long way. One more season with Bucky will be huge for him.

He's a testament to the fact that pretty much every single guy on every single Division I team has the potential to ball out given the right circumstances. None of these guys got DI offers unless they were alphas on their high school teams and that game is hidden inside all of them somewhere. For a lot of players it just takes a bit of time to adjust to the physicality and length of the college game. This is especially true at the P4 level. I played a lot of ball at the Rec center when I was a student (03-08) and I will always remember the games we played against the team in the rec center over the summer. I was a good rec ball player, but against the length and strength of Martellus, Bryan Davis, Roland, I became essentially useless on the court. Everyone thinks they are a good 3PT shooter until you have a 6'7'' guy close out on your shot from the paint and stuff it. It's just a different world against high level athletes. (for context I'm 6'3'' so in rec ball world that means I'm tall, against college level athletes I'm tiny)

With Zach, it's likely that he just easily dominated his competition in HS as a highly skilled 6'11'' kid, and it's taken time to get used to the fact that what played in HS doesn't work here. We can see him slowly figuring it out though and gaining confidence in a new repertoire of moves that do work. He's even used his body to work inside with a bit more effectiveness recently. There was a stretch early in the season where he probably missed 10 straight layups because he was dodging contact.

The next stage of development for him has to be grabbing more rebounds and figuring out how to not pick up silly fouls.

As for NBA, no way unless he decides he wants to rebound and defend. The only path he has is as a 3&D stretch 4 and he has not shown that specific skillset yet.

All great coaches are great teachers at some level. Bucky is a teacher, and he's taking a pupil and building a legit skill set. The kid did things last night we didn't see a few weeks back. Very impressive....

Yeah he obviously had talent to end up with a scholarship offer from Kansas. He was a top 100 player, but some players just don't translate to the next level. I kind of figured that was the case for him, but it was probably more a combo of taking time to develop and having really great players in front of him at Kansas.
