We used to throw hands up on a 3 and if they made it there was a three count and everyone jumped up. Made a big thump. Not sure if they still chant Whoosh, reload after a made FT. There used to be handful of offense chants like "army.. army" this was during Gillespieville/Turgeon Town days.

The atmosphere rivaled Dean Dome and Allen Field House.

I still think we should bring back the stuff we used to do during BCG days through 2016 when we have the ball on offense, or at least some of them, it isn't football where you have to be damn silent when we have the ball. I was re-watching the Iowa State and UK games from 2016 when we honored them this year and the crowds felt like they had more juice and the students weren't just standing their in silence when we have the ball.

Even just "Texas Aggies" chant or even just "Ag-gies clap clap". This is just my opinion but it gave more life to the arena than. I have no idea why we stopped. Again, its not football where you have to be silent when we have the ball

these are the exact things I want them to bring back in my previous post on this thread. I don't know why we stopped doing them

1000% agree but never liked the "ao ao army" one, it just never sounded good to me

I'm told they have been doing the three point one but it just hasn't caught back on.

Someone who might be able to actually do something may or may not have reached out to me reading this thread. So keep the ideas coming.

I agree, it was never my favorite either, but it's just one I distinctly remember at the moment.

Back in the day, the Yell Boys called for a, " Sit Down Bus Driver !!" At least twice a game.

Really really got the crowd hyped up.

Never see it anymore.

I guess we're kinder and gentler now…

Maybe we have another same but different yell

Not really a distraction but I think the Benny Hill theme while introducing the other team's starters is absolutely hysterical.

Granted, these players have no idea who Benny Hill is/was, but that doesn't make it any less funny for those of us of a certain age.

It would be awesome if the entire student section saw varsity's horns off while yelling A-G-G-I-E-S three times during timeouts to keep the crowd hyped. Sway and yell slowly the first time, go up to medium the second time and go to fast the third time. At the end the students unlink and yell 'Fight em Aggies'!

Think of it as Saw Varsity's Horns Off, A-G-G-I-E-S yell and the locomotive yell all in one.

Chant "We're awesome, we're awesome, hit them in the face with a big fat possum."

Then we throw possums on the court like we're the Detroit red wings with octopi. Would it get any more unique than that?

All for new chants, etc to enhance the atmosphere. Just a couple of house keeping items as we discuss. One, can we time our actions better when the other team is shooting free throws. We typically yell or move after they have released the ball. Second, can we all agree to get the DJ to shut down the music when other things are going on?

I'm all for introducing new stuff. Or bringing back some of the old stuff as mentioned.

But can we at least work on getting everyone on the same page somehow. The most basic "defense clap clap" chant sounds horrible most of the time because the two ends of the student section are saying it at different times with different cadences. I try to get involved with my section but it both hurts my head and no one reallly knows which one to go with…

I'm not an anti DJ person, but the volume is pretty ridiculous, especially in certain parts of the arena. It's actually not as bad when music is playing but more the pregame videos when Monaco and Thornton are talking. But it's literally painful if you're towards the top of the lower bowl along the sidelines.

The split student section definitely creates some issues for faster chants. We need one side to start it and the other said to wait and join in or something. But that's also why anything new needs some kind on on-court cue.

I really like the idea of this:

- When a three goes up, everyone puts their arms up
- Yell boom as it goes through the net (no more counting down)
- immediately transition into yelling "ball, ball" as they're inbounding it (we already do this anyway)
- once it's in, if we're pressing, start counting up from one (I bet the crowd could steal a few turnovers over the course of the season with this, because the counting will be faster than the actual clock and some players will panic)
- if they turn it over chant either "buck-y ball" or "toooooo slow, tooooo slow"
- if they cross half court settle back in to de-dense chant or just start bouncing up and down and yelling A

That looks complicated but it's really just mostly combining things we already do. But imagine how insane that place would be if we caused a couple back court turnovers into threes in a row.

This would be awesome. Do we need yell practice for basketball games every so often to help coordinate this?

We actually kind of did this once. There was a big game where students lined up outside the arena, can't remember which one, but as a result the student sections were full a whole hour before the game.

The yell leaders got on the mic and actually went over a few things.

Another thing that would help with new stuff is a few Rowdies taking one for the team and sitting further back in the student section for a game or two. It's hard for people to learn stuff when the only people that know it are in the first five rows.

Bob, it sounds like you have contacts to get some of this to whomever we need to. If you did an impromptu yell practice you would have to coordinate with whomever controls the dj That freaking music is playing loud as hell every single second they can. Yell leaders wouldn't be able to explain or coordinate anything.

I really wish we could get him to take a break so I could visit a few minutes before the game and during half-time. Its so annoying to not get a break at all for 2.5 hours.

I said in another thread if you have to buy some pizza to get some of the college people in power into a meeting, I'll chip in.

4-5 of our best racks exposed in front of the ft shooter should be pretty distracting. Must be saved for very important ft attempts and late in games tho as the penalty probably ends the season for that subset of Rowdies… if they get caught . Maybe ski masks and a lot of seat shifting immediately thereafter could save the day.
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yeah I'm sure they would coordinate that all together. There's plenty of time in the lead up to the game that isn't sponsored content where they could do it.

Do have to cut everyone a little break, we've only had three home games with significant student attendance. These things do take time to organize and implement. The big opportunity will be between this season and next season.

I like the idea of complete and utter silence...and when the other team starts to shoot the free throw one loud person has a list of out of pocket things to say. Something stupid like im carrying your baby. We could come up with a list of things to say for each game. Would be fun and its very r****-esque.

Obviously this would be tough to pull off the complete silence but imo one person yelling something hilarious would be a lot more distracting than ambient noise that can be tuned out.

I think the key is to mix it up all the time. That should definitely be one of them though. The one where everyone sits down and then jumps up and yells right before the shot was a good one but it was too late about half the time.

I will say as a current student who's often up front in the student section (second row for South Carolina, near the Rowdies).

A) We still do the "1, 2, 3 *jump*" after a a 3-pointer and have my entire time at A&M. It just doesn't make any noise when you get up to the concrete parts past the lower student section.

B) The "AAAAA" until tip-off is another one that's common.

Personally, I'm disappointed in our free throw distractions. The Saw 'Em Off idea during free throws is a great idea. As is anything that's team or player specific, like counting out loud how long it takes for Meechie Johnson to shoot a free throw.

I'd love to see more European-style singing and chanting, especially coming out of timeouts when the opponent has the ball.
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Counting for Meechie was one of the best things I've seen from the students in a while, that was funny.

Also a trick on the three point thing is to stomp instead of jump if you want it to actually make noise. But I kind of think just yelling "boom" when it goes in would be more effective.

I can't remember who started it the first time, but the yell leaders did initiate it multiple times throughout the game. Really encouraging to see them be fluid and adaptable and not stuck with cookie cutter yells/distractions.

They've always been more willing to try new stuff than people on here give them credit for.

Or they've been willing to step aside for stuff that it doesn't make sense for them to be involved in, like the PJ Tucker book drive, lol.

My senior year at Clear Lake, we played Houston Waltrip in the Summit.

They had a fantastic fan cheer where half their crowd would yell,

" Waltrips big and Waltrips bad, they're the best we've ever had!!"

Then the other half would simply yell,

"Boom ( bass drum)sha Boom Hey Hey Hey Boom Sha Boom!!

Then both sides would yell, "Boom sha Boom Hey Hey Hey, Boom sha Boom!!!

Then repeat a few times with each time getting louder

I know it sounds corny but it really sounded awesome. We were their opponent and loved it.

All the way home on the team bus we did that chant. Obviously we won. If we lost, we weren't allowed to talk on the bus ride home. That only happened twice.

Ok, press on.

What I've noticed at basketball and volleyball is that it takes way too long. When an opposing coach is working a ref for too long, after the yell leaders notice, organize themselves, give the signal for what seems like forever, and finally execute the yell, the coach has long since already sat down. To be effective, the yell has to be much more timely.

Agree that sit down bus driver needs to be more of a chant than a yell that can start more spontaneously.
