My daughter had heard "survive and advance" and "don't give up, don't ever give up" but had never heard the Jimmy V speech. Worth listening to every year if not more, he died 2 months after this event.

I was on the faculty at NC State from 1982-93 (yes, I'm an "old"). Had season basketball tickets. Of course, the '82-'83 season was the year of the "Cardiac Pack" and the implausible run to the national championship. Coach V was an amazingly charismatic man. I still get chills when I see that ESPY speach.

The really amazing thing is yhe backdrop to that speech. He was sick as a dog and wasn't going to go. They (forgot who) talked him into it. i believe that wasnon 30 For 30.

600,000 Americans died from X last year.
0 Americans died Y last year.

For X the US government spends 1% of what it spends on Y.

X being cancer (and research)
Y being "defense/war"

This is the completely nonsensical world we live in. And the fact that most Americans don't seem to care about this disparity (effectively brainwashed by the media to somehow/someway believe Y deserves exponentially more than X) shows how far gone we are.

Imagine how fast we could cure cancer instead of 8 billion in cancer research and 800 billion on defense- we spent $400 billion on cancer research and $400 billion on defense?

And- for those who are thoroughly brainwashed on our need for $800 billion in defense spending, $400 billion in defense spending would "still" put us $100 billion ahead of the next biggest defense spending nation.

Freedom and prosperity isn't free. Would you rather be the nation in second place? I get what you're saying but carrying a big stick also saves lives.

When there is financial incentive for the medical industry to cure cancer, it will happen.. Right now, there are too many billions to be made in cancer "treatment". Did you know MD Anderson employs around 25K people?
