Look, you were willing to pay BIG bucks to Beard. He used you like a frat house.

So you clearly have some big donors backing behind you and have the approval to write a big check.

Go out and get one of these three coaches and be done with it by tonight!

Creighton - McDermott
High Point - Huss
Lutz - OSU

Pick any damn order for all I care. Love to have McDermott but lets avoid due to age and the nasty gaunlet of NIL recruiting.

Toss up between Huss or Lutz. Leverage each of them, offer both, and give them until sun down to sign.

Do this and you will have a contract later today and a fairly happy fan base.

Do NOT make this more complicated that it needs to be. Call me if you need help in the negotiations room. Quit wasting your time and athletic money on trying to lure a SEC HC that will not be any better than Buzz. Give us some damn upside in the hire!!!

Not a Trev defender by any means but this board clamored for Beard and by all reports, Trev tried to bring him. Its now been two days since he said no, not sure why we are badgering Trev for not doing his job.

It shouldnt take 48 hrs to close the deal. Every extra day he takes....he loses opportunity. We are not a hoops destination. All these coaches are gonna up their own contracts and laugh to the bank while we still have no HC. Speed matters!!!!!!

I personally think he is scared and performing this search from fear based googles. He knows this could be the end of him longer term.

Grab some damn balls and get a deal done. Killer instincts....go ask CDC.

We honestly have no idea what's happening, but based on the breadcrumbs I think this search is going exactly how you'd want it to.

Tick off the big names that we were probably never going to get anyway, if you get any sort of hint that you might get one of them then you need to play out the string no matter how unlikely it seems on the surface.

After that, you move on the next tier of coaches, but those require some more research and talking to some people in the coaching world. What are their strengths, how do they build a program, what kind of staff might they put together, what are their weaknesses. Take the time to figure out which direction you want to go.

And the portal being "open" only matters for going into it. They don't have to decide where they're going, or even IF they're going, by April 22nd. That's just the deadline for putting their name in.

I sure hope this assessment of the strategy is correct.

Seems to be he is running in a zig zag.

If I am an AD, I am very good at contengency planning and being ahead of the curve. Clearly this is not our AD. He is far more reactionary and this puts us at a disadvantage. Plain and simple.

Throwing everything at a single HC candidate is STUPID from any business perspective. Nice serial approach to doing things. NOT.

But what are you basing this one that we threw everything at just one guy? Maybe we've thrown it at others and it didn't get out, or more likely, we just got a flat no on our opening pitch and so it never even got past that.

Why can Maryland have a guy lined up when they know their coach is leaving but we can't do the same?

We should have had someone lined up already in case beard said no

I also think people have to realize that timing is different for us than it was for some other programs.

Like CDC probably never wanted to hire Rodney Terry to start with and has more or less had Sean Miller in his back pocket for three years. They knew they were going to fire him two months ago probably, and probably has the agents and whoever working out the details.

By contrast, we did not know for sure that Buzz was leaving. We knew he was going to try, but he still had to find someone to take him. So we don't even know for sure that our job is going to come open, so we can't be negotiating the details with potential coaches. We can put out feelers, which is apparently exactly what we did, and that's why we thought we might have a chance at Beard and had to run that down.

So in our case, we could have had some kind of grand vision for what our ideal coaching search looks like, but we couldn't put it into action until the first domino fell, which was Buzz actually leaving.

We hired Trev for his management of a budget not his ability to hire coaches and of course with Aggie luck we have 2 high profile programs in need of a new head coach. Fingers crossed but he has no history of closing on high profile coaches.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Also - whether you want to admit it or not - coaches aren't clamoring and beating down our door to come here. Despite our success over the past 20-ish years, A&M is still looked upon as a basketball wasteland. We are not a destination job. At A&M, one of two things will happen. One, you stink it up and you get fired. Or two, you do really well and get hired away by a bigger, better program. We have 100+ years of history and data to back this up...those are the only two options. Call it loser's mentality or whatever. I call it truth.

Also, do not expect us to get a coach from a major program to come here. History shows we'll get our coaches who have had a little success at some mid-major or non-power school and hope they pan out here.

Kermit Davis - Idaho
Tony Barone - Creighton...this was well before Creighton was what they are today
Melvin Watkins - UNC-Charlotte
Billy Gillispie - UTEP
Mark Turgeon - Wichita State
Billy Kennedy - Murray State
Buzz Williams - Virginia Tech

So to honestly think we'll poach someone from Ole Miss, Texas Tech, or other big money school is...quite frankly...ridiculous.

Other than you knowing they offered a mega-package to Chris Beard as the guy at the top of their list, and he decided to stay at Ole Miss...do you really know anything else about the search being conducted? Do you know who they have been since and are now talking too? If not, then how can you form any sort of impression of the execution of the search, other than a hire has not been made yet?

Because they targeted a guy that they knew wanted to leave. Also they got a guy most on here don't want.

I'm a buzz defender but even I would say that Maryland sort of panicked with their hire caused by not having an AD and choosing a guy that basically came to them from a school that wasn't going to fight his departure.

You see this as a negative though, where I think it's a positive compared to some peer schools. Look at other schools you'd say are similar to us, do any of them have our kind of track record for getting you to the big job?

Every recent coach that's gotten us to the NCAA Tournament has been hired by a Tier 1 or Tier 2 (depending on where you think Maryland falls) job except for the one that had some other complicated considerations. And even that one got us out of the first weekend twice and was here for eight years and made a ton of money before we finally fired him.

So I think this is a very attractive job for a certain level of coach.

But you're right, that level of coach is not a coach that already has this level of job or better. There's no reason to come here from Texas Tech or a place like that. Any coaches like that were always a longshot and would have taken an absolutely unprecedented level of financial commitment. Worth trying, but always unlikely.

This is typically how all similar hiring processes work. In all industries. There is a list that forms in preferred order and you work the list. You are not typically simultaneously offering multiple people and telling them 'first one to take the job gets it!'. And offers are not always identical. If you want to hire a proven all-star that will be hard to pull from his current job, then you'll have to tailor the offer accordingly.

Your posted opinion above makes it sound like A&M was stupid to even try to take a big swing a Chris Beard.

Like Method has been saying, people are too worried about looking desperate. Who cares. We ARE desperate. We want a winner, and we're going to try to find one.

The message board mentality is like jumping up on a table at the bar and asking the hottest girl in the room out and then if she says no just immediately giving up and texting the ugly girl in your phone that you know is at home by herself because your feelings got hurt and you don't want to try again.

Exactly. Everyone is complaining about how Trev is handling the situation without knowing how Trev is handling the situation. Makes me believe are just mad because they don't know what is going on. Trev may be handling this perfectly. He may be botching beyond reason. However, no one outside his circle truly seems to know. I realize everyone here is an expert, but just chose a different career, but cut him some slack until you have some facts.

No expert needed to look at his track record and be concerned about how and whom he is going after.
He doesn't have a track record of coaching hires that makes you say "I am not concerned".
Just being real.
I have been a basketball season ticket holder since G Rollie days so I am hoping he makes a great hire because sitting through 0-16 conference seasons are no fun.

The problem with the analogy is that you also can't ask all the prettiest girls in the bar out and get rejected and then expect the ugly girls to go home with you. They don't want to go home with a reject. No one does. Same with coaching, if all the good coaches reject you, the mid coaches are going to start rejecting you too just because they figure there's a reason the good coaches aren't wanting to come here.

Maryland didn't get a big name. They got a guy who wanted to move and has a crazy amount of question marks.

Well that's why just jumping up on the table and asking the hot one in the first place is a bad play. That was part of the analogy. Of course that's not going to work if you're not the best looking guy in the room, which we aren't. You gotta work the angles, see who might be in play, ask friends, then go for the best and most realistic options.

What if you are the boss and you have FIVE candidates for a job opening, and you call all five to offer the job to them, and all five decide to renege the offer?

Raise your hand if you would go to each five, put a gun to their head, and try to force them to take the job?

Our next head coach may still be coaching in the Final Four, as an assistant head coach.
