I am not sure that anyone other than Buzz Williams knows.
I like Coach and hope nothing but blessings on his career going forward. He builds young men - and that is refreshing in a world of athletics that usually merely exploits them, which results in a cycle of exploitation: School exploits coac who exploits players who exploit school who exploits coach....
Personally, I detest that kind of culture.
B. Liucci, if I understood correctly, said that April 1 was ALSO the last day for A&M to offer an extension.
I suspect that, for whatever reason, Coach realized that any menaingful extension was not on the table (and I think that for a "culture" coach he wanted an extension that kept him off a hot seat for at least 2-3 years. And, who among us, seriously, wants to stay at the same salary we signed for in 2019? Have y'all heard anything about something called "inflation" that has come... BIG TIME, since 2019. So, if there were not more dollars, then we were essentially saying that Coach had done such a poor job that we were content, due to inflation, to paying him LESS than what he signed for 6 years ago. )
How many of us, after doing a good job, advancing the company and the brand, and almost accomplishing amazing results would be satisfied with anything less than AT LEAST a Cost of Living Raise????? let's be honest.
And, if you are in a profession where expectations are far higher now than 6 years ago, precisely because of the accomplishments in your first contract. Now you are asked to meet even higher expectations... but this time only given 1 or 2 years to rebuild and achieve them??? Seriously, is that a contract you would sign if you could go over to "Corporation B" for more money, 6 year time frame, and corporation with a better portfolio than the one you are currently serving?
I am wondering if Coach Williams sensed that his current employer was in a "we need more results from you" mood,/ Maybe Coach, knowing how hard the rebuild could be, felt he had earned instead " great beginning, we believe you deserve some raise and some extension support - let's go for the gold! Oh, and what do you need in terms of NIL. Let's do it!"
Which contract/corporation would you choose?
