How did we get here ?
I have been following the buzz threads but not closely and not sure if it was determined because those threads are TLDR

Imo sometime before that end of season swoon We whorls have give him a small raise , a small extension and more money for his assts

I understand TA has orders to hold the line on spending but how things played out seems to be

" Penny wise Pound foolish "

I will hang up and listen

We wanted him to get the Maryland job. They did not try to keep him.

Doesn't matter now. We must have avoided most of what he wanted so we were successful in that regard

He announced his departure 10 days after the last game.

Don't kid yourself, he's been talking to the Turtles for a while.

Not as bad as Schloss' departure, but still a slap in the face.

I'm sure there were some, but I'm not sure everyone wanted him to go.

Buzz was leaving no matter what. It what he does. He did it before us and he'll do it after us.

As for how we could have kept him? Do not keep a guy who doesn't want to be here.

He Had us in the top 20 for most of the year and I think having him back even it required a raise might be preferable to our current situation

I was one of the few that wanted to see him back (assuming he wanted to be here and was motivated to reload in portal) but not for a raise. That's insane

Why I say they wanted him to go, I mean when it was clear he didn't want to be here. He wasn't trying to get the Maryland job, he was trying to get any good job that wasn't A&M.

Had one year left on his contract and we weren't going to extend him. Didn't see eye to eye with the AD and didn't want to rebuild. The writing was on the wall; it was an impasse.

I am not sure that anyone other than Buzz Williams knows.
I like Coach and hope nothing but blessings on his career going forward. He builds young men - and that is refreshing in a world of athletics that usually merely exploits them, which results in a cycle of exploitation: School exploits coac who exploits players who exploit school who exploits coach....
Personally, I detest that kind of culture.
B. Liucci, if I understood correctly, said that April 1 was ALSO the last day for A&M to offer an extension.
I suspect that, for whatever reason, Coach realized that any menaingful extension was not on the table (and I think that for a "culture" coach he wanted an extension that kept him off a hot seat for at least 2-3 years. And, who among us, seriously, wants to stay at the same salary we signed for in 2019? Have y'all heard anything about something called "inflation" that has come... BIG TIME, since 2019. So, if there were not more dollars, then we were essentially saying that Coach had done such a poor job that we were content, due to inflation, to paying him LESS than what he signed for 6 years ago. )
How many of us, after doing a good job, advancing the company and the brand, and almost accomplishing amazing results would be satisfied with anything less than AT LEAST a Cost of Living Raise????? let's be honest.
And, if you are in a profession where expectations are far higher now than 6 years ago, precisely because of the accomplishments in your first contract. Now you are asked to meet even higher expectations... but this time only given 1 or 2 years to rebuild and achieve them??? Seriously, is that a contract you would sign if you could go over to "Corporation B" for more money, 6 year time frame, and corporation with a better portfolio than the one you are currently serving?
I am wondering if Coach Williams sensed that his current employer was in a "we need more results from you" mood,/ Maybe Coach, knowing how hard the rebuild could be, felt he had earned instead " great beginning, we believe you deserve some raise and some extension support - let's go for the gold! Oh, and what do you need in terms of NIL. Let's do it!"
Which contract/corporation would you choose?

Buzz hit his ceiling here and he knew it.

He knew it would be a big rebuild here and anywhere else he went so he decided to choose elsewhere to reset the contract clock.

A bad year or two here and he's toast. A bad year or two somewhere else and he's building

Like a lot of us said before all this even went down, trying to ascribe some kind of normal reasoning to Buzz's decisions is misguided. It's almost definitely not about money, or attendance, or NIL, or feeling like he hit his ceiling, or any of the normal stuff that might motivate a coach to leave.

1. We gave Coach G more money and an extension that we are having to wait till next year to get him into retirement . The program is just about to hit bottom right now and looks to be total goal impaired.

2. We hired Joni Taylor out of Ga with a very competitive salary and years to build a program. What have we got to show for that after 3 years?

3 and we gave jimbo an extension with pay increase that is costing us dearly across the whole athletic spectrum.

How about just Thanking our lucky stars Maryland came calling for Buzz, when they did. They may have just saved ourself from another bad situation. (See above)

And I am actually glad Beard turned us down. We threw big bucks out there and other coaches know we mean business. It is best Beard stays out of the Texas media spotlight. That would be bad for us and him. He is in his own little world in Oxford Ms and can operate freely.

Just move on and quit whining. Trev is doing the best he can and doesn't need a bunch of Karens nagging his ass!

I'm kind of glad we didn't get beard. The hard part is, when you money-whip someone, they tend to lose motivation.

I want a hard-charger who is dying to show what he can do and sees what we have and says, "that baby just needs a little tweaking and it's going to be a perennial power"

Dude, when you make $5MM/yr you're not worried about inflation. But you might be worried if you can't recruit, you mismanaged your roster and have no one left, and you've only won two tournament games in 6 years.

All conjecture of course.. Breakups are messy and usually two sides. These are professionals and I don't believe either cheated on the other.

Company line is best, as in Hollywood, "We just grew apart".

Some families/friends take a side (usually the jilted one) and hold grudges and spread crap. Most from both sides move on.

My problem is that he didn't show that things would be better next year or that he even earned his pay to this point. He had a good run and still failed in the tournament.

However, if we dont have a coach by tomorrow I'm thinking this is going to unfortunately be a leap backwards that will take aggie basketball off the map for a fanbase that doesnt care much about basketball

We would have had to make a blood promise that we would not fire Buzz next offseason when he got bounced from Round 1 or 2 again, after going .600 in conference and being the worst shooting team in the league.

Pretty big problem that he was so smart and the strategy was wonderful but they can't shoot.

It'll be different from a&m but looking for buzz to take you beyond sweet 16 for the first time since 2002 is a bold strategy. I mean he's been there one time before in 19 years

He surely didn't deserve one; I was in favor of having a tiered extension

Not that we care because Buzz is weird and seems loyal only to Buzz, but this is compounded by him not having an agent. He didn't have an agent doing some background work on open positions, ROM contract ideas, etc. Buzz was doing his own phone calls to reach out to Maryland and Indiana and whoever else.

To the OP: Buzz wanted to leave to go anywhere else. He has a career of leaving schools after 6 or so years and those schools not really being sorry he left. He is a high floor / low ceiling guy, he'll continue to be a high floor / low ceiling guy for the next 5-6 years at Maryland and then move on again. It's ok that he left

To clarify, he was given an extension before the 2023-24 season.
