Doesn't that put us in the top 5 highest paid? Should be able to attract just about anyone. https://sportsdata.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/mens-basketball/coach

It's not a secret now. Anyone who is interested can have their agent inquire.

You can't get the best coach by offering the best money. Thats not how it works…

I would think we've already reached out to different coaches to gauge interest and were told no thanks before it could even get that far

This further cements my theory that we could offer a coach 100M and they still wouldn't come to Aggieland. Why? Because why would he?

It's based on the only 2 hires trev has had to make. Recency bias basically

Bob, no. We have had complete and utter failure on all levels of athletics for years now and it started with the Trev hire. I knew that was a terrible AD hire and sure enough, every single sport has turned to utter dog crap.

No I didn't want to throw Dollar Bill under too but it's a systemic problem. How many universities have the $$$ we have and still aren't top 5 in their state?

There were two other athletic directors between Alberts and Byrne.

If people want some kind of systemic problem, it's not in athletic directors. It's probably more from people meddling and not letting athletic directors do their jobs.

But A&M has had a leadership problem for a long time now. Across the board. It's impacted every part of the university.

It's okay. I'll be sending my kids to a university not A&M so I have a legitimate sports school to root for.

Seems like one in there somewhere said, "...manage expectations" and really caused a stir. Maybe misremembering, though.

Yep, OP gets it. It's a simple algorithm:

1) select the top 20 coaches in the 35-50 y/o age bracket
2) rank them...the ranking criteria are not critical
3) offer coach #1 the highest salary of all 20 coaches + $1MM/yr + 5 yr guarantee to come here. Tell him that if he doesn't come, coach #2 will get the same offer, but with an extra $500k/yr salary
4) offer coach #2 the highest salary of all 20 coaches + $1.5MM/yr + 5 yr guarantee to come here. Tell him that if doesn't come, coach #3 will get the same offer, but with yet another $500k/yr extra salary
5) offer coach #3 the highest salary of all 20 coaches + $2MM/yr + ...

eventually we'll snag one.

Repeat this algorithm every 3-5 years and we'll reach the elite in just a few cycles

If you want to accelerate the process, you can shift the coach's compensation every year from mostly salary + modest performance bonuses to modest salary + huge performance bonuses. If you want to really accelerate the process, promise $100k each to eSIPn and the NCAA for every game we win.

Fat Boy- why would you up the ante as you move down the list? moving DOWN the list creates its own incentive-

you're offering the initial exhorbitant amount to a theoretically not-as-good coach.

The idea -- along with the restricted age range -- is to target a certain set of deep-seated values in the new coach. We've learned, especially in MBB, it's not as simple as "money whipping" an already-successful coach on board.

We need someone whose success thus far is something that they, deep down inside, know is not based on stars aligning, and someone with an ingrained, nasty, zero sum game mindset. Making them aware that the next worst coach will get paid more than them if they pass up the opportunity would target both of those requirements.

Making them aware that we will shift the bulk of compensation from guaranteed salary to per-win over their tenure will also filter for those requirements. Ideally we want a coach who will ask for this from day 1, and even come up with some creative ideas of where else we can dispense per-win rewards (I was only half joking about direct payments to eSIPn and NCAA) to ensure more wins.

Getting coaches with this mindset will change where in the solution space we're directing our efforts. Sure, "build a good program" and "consistently accumulate fan support" are great, but I think we need someone who will try to hotwire championships like their a$$ is on fire. It seems like this formula works very well across MBB. And if you want more clarity on the direction I'm thinking, in all seriousness, we may want to start recruiting recently retired Mossad.
