I think the idea that somehow the coach is an accessory to the talent is based on some shaky assumptions.
The biggest is assuming that you're going to get elite talent anyway. If some of the numbers being thrown around for portal guys are true then elite rosters are costing upwards of $10M.
So if that's the case, we're probably already going to be behind teams like Arkansas and Kentucky on talent, and AT BEST on par with schools like Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, Texas, Alabama, etc.
Well those programs already have really good coaches. Are we going to beat them with a worse coach even if we have the same level of talent?
We need a coach that can win with second tier prospects. Whether that's by being an expert talent evaluator, talent developer, or running some kind of system that they know exactly what kind of players fit it. It can't just be some mid coach.
