Use the NBA model. Solid coach with the best players

Hell Fred Hoiberg coached in the NBA and is a solid coach, buy him the best players and go roll

Done.

Thanks for the tip.

Will boosters be willing to pony up NIL like that for a $3mill no name coach? That's the question.

If we hire a coach who is like Buzz or Kennedy, the future NBA players will still not want to play for you even for more money. Their goal is the NBA.

Hoiberg already makes over $4M.

Fred Hoiberg has a Losing-record almost every year. Lmao. What a weird coach to suggest. He looks terrible. Nebraska would pay us to take him.

I like a coach with NBA ties (like Musselman was for Arky), but not if the guy is recruiting mediocre right now in a P4 conference.

$5mil in NIL is a good start, but it isn't going to compete with the very top levels of the sport. Goodman said this week he's hearing the top level of teams will be spending $8-10mil for this upcoming season. Donovan Dent alone got $3mil to go to UCLA.

I'm guessing you don't actually know what wins in college. It's not solid coaching, it's elite coaching.

I like it, but how about $1M to coach and $7M players?

Get Luke Murray & let him build

Instant celebrity that can recruit the northeast

Just don't give him an idiotic multi year guarantee deal like we did earley

Nice thing about nil basketball is that if it's a complete disaster you can have a brand new team next year

Its a bad model ($3M and $5M). When that fails, what do you do? Go $8M on NIL? $10M? Seriously, enough is enough.

Preach on brother. Unlike me, very few listen to the preacher!

This is what we tried with baseball.

Not saying I'm against trying it again though... Not sure if the boosters feel the same..

Good luck getting anyone for that, plus he won't be able to hire any staff work a damn if you're that cheap on the HC

You think we can hire a coach with a one year contract? We didn't pay him a ton in case he didn't work out and we got $2.7 mil from the sips for taking Schloss. It's a wash if we make a change after this year...

Half kidding, but I agree with the OP. The point is to save more for the players. This is just the state of the game. I think you can find a good Xs and Os coach for $3M and pay market value for the players (or at least be competitive).

$3M max for coach and whatever we can afford in NIL.

Liucci said we were offering Beard 7 million in NIL so I imagine that is what we will be doing

Nevermind that's what Ole Miss bumped their NIL up to

I think the idea that somehow the coach is an accessory to the talent is based on some shaky assumptions.

The biggest is assuming that you're going to get elite talent anyway. If some of the numbers being thrown around for portal guys are true then elite rosters are costing upwards of $10M.

So if that's the case, we're probably already going to be behind teams like Arkansas and Kentucky on talent, and AT BEST on par with schools like Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, Texas, Alabama, etc.

Well those programs already have really good coaches. Are we going to beat them with a worse coach even if we have the same level of talent?

We need a coach that can win with second tier prospects. Whether that's by being an expert talent evaluator, talent developer, or running some kind of system that they know exactly what kind of players fit it. It can't just be some mid coach.

If we pay 3 mill for a coach the NIL needs to be closer to 10.

Buzz was a big time hire. Kennedy was the best we could do in an awkward timeline thanks to Gary Williams retiring in the summer.

Well said. We don't have the rabid eternal fanbase. Maybe we'll have a weighty NIL fund, but even then, the teams that have rebuilt in one season all have institutional strengths we'll never have. If we want to compete on the top level, we can't just act like the bluebloods, we'll need to find other ways.

What's the alternative? A $5/7M coach isn't a guarantee either. I'd rather bet on the players.

That's a big ask when we can't seem to sell out Top 10 match ups and rivalry games at Reed.

Sports are a business. There has to be a return on that investment. If we don't put butts in seats at games, we can't expect that kind of investment on the court.
