Dean Smith was about the only guy who ever held Michael under 20.

Surely no one is surprised by this news or the ones that are on the way.
It's where we are in college basketball for the most part.

If Buzz brings all his guys - including those redshirt freshmen- to Maryland he will have a core of talent (even if much unproven as of yet) to build from.

Wonder if we will get some players from whichever small school poach our new HC from...???

Does Okie State have any returning players that we could use? High Point? Samford?

This is why the outcome of Aggie games no longer bother me. I watch them all and want us to win but these guys aren't one of us anymore. When it's over I move on.

Buzz highly misused him all year. At times he would almost stubbornly lean on him, only to back away the next game. Was very frustrating.

Also Payne is not exactly what I would think of as a great systemic fit for Buckyball.

I'm more surprised that hes jumped straight to MD and didn't flirt with some bigger programs first. If I was Bill Self I would have been going hard after Payne.

I don't think the amount of loyalty has significantly changed. Kids just have more options in the portal era. Don't fool yourself into believing kids were more loyal before.

And to counter your "no more loyalty" we just graduated two players in Wade Taylor and Henry Coleman who each spent 4 years in the program. They seemingly were everything you would want in a "student athlete": good to great athletes, graduated, never any off court issues, involved in campus life outside of basketball, etc.

And yet a vocal minority of our fan base crapped on them constantly (especially Coleman) because they were not good enough and we did not win enough.

I think loyalty stopped being a thing around 1980.

I think players would always put loyalty to a coach over loyalty to a school. I would guess most of them don't have a strong connection to the school and the relationship with the coach is what got them here.

Disagree. He fits the protype 5 athletic rim protector/dunker that can run end to end. That's what the NBA wants and it appears Bucky is similar, except for the pressing aspect Bucky demands- which he is a good fit for Payne as well, given his athleticism..

Now if Payne played the 4 I would agree with you- since he can't shoot from 3. That's why I don't think Solo necessarily would have been a good fit here with Bucky.
