It appears basketball is the most vulnerable sport to fixing games.

Gambling and sports don't mix well. Been known since 1919…

…and possibly since 776 BCE….

No other team sport in the big 4 can have a game derailed more by just a single player than in basketball.

refs have got to be in on the action

It has to be a guard, and even then I would say a pitcher has the greatest opportunity to fix games.

I think it's harder for a pitcher because if he's not pitching well he'll get pulled, whereas a guard on hoops can play most of the game well but then make a few bad plays down the stretch to allow the other team to cover

My take as well. A closer has more control over the outcome but not how the score plays out throughout the game.

Definitely a 1 or 2 guard in basketball can throw a game more easily.

is points shaving actually illegal, or is it just frowned upon like counting cards/tax evasion/money laundering/insider trading/farting in an elevator

Yes it is illegal.

I'm not a lawyer but I believe most states have specific statutes that govern it. I couldn't find the Texas one but I believe this section of the penal code would govern it:

"except for the advantage of skill or luck, the risks of losing and the chances of winning were the same for all participants."

Anything in violation of that is considered illegal gambling by law.

I will be honest and say there are times over the last several weeks we were bad enough that I thought it's possible we were point shaving. Some of the decisions on offense and turnovers were just inexplicable.

(By the way, this is more of an insult to our execution and not an allegation.)

There is still time to delete this. Ridiculous to say something like that. We haven't executed well but we are playing 4 high level tournament teams that could go deep into March. The guys are playing their hearts out and if anything trying too hard in some cases and just need to relax and let the game come to them. This comment is garbage.

Historically it is the sport that you can fix without really knowing. Typically the fixers are caught such as the last major one at Arizona St in the early 90's when a midweek game gets a big time increase in the action on that game when it should not. Oddsmakers are very good and you often swear every game is fixed you cant think like that though b/c if you did you'd think every Tamu game is fixed with all the turnovers and dumb passes.

Wasn't there an NBA ref who got arrested for betting on games he was reffing?

Did you guys see that feature on Pat Adams's Atlanta home? It was wild.

If you find interviews of college basketball players involved in point shaving in the past, it's not a matter of bricking free throws, dribbling off of a foot or making bad passes. Instead, most will mention simply being a step slow to close out on an open shooter, which in high level hoops is almost gifting a bucket to the other team.

Tim Donaghy

Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul is an interesting Netflix piece on him.
