Nothing earth shattering here, but thought it was interesting to hear an outsiders perspective on A&M. Out running errands and tuned to a college basketball chat on the radio. They were discussing teams that can win it all.

Somebody brought up St. Johns. This guy said he can't wait to pick St. John's to get upset in round 1. He said March Madness is about when you need a bucket, can you get a bucket and St John's can't. St John's is great defensive and rebounding team but shoot worse than us from three and FT line. I'm thinking ok this guy hates A&M too based off what he said about St John's. Then somebody threw out A&M and he said that is one team that if I am a fan, I don't want to see in my team's region. He said everything we said about St. John's applies to A&M and St John's is better defensive team than A&M, but he said I think Wade Taylor can get you a bucket. Said A&M just beats teams up. The guy saying all this is a Kentucky guy They didn't get into A&M as a national championship contender. They didn't say A&M was going to make a run or go far (they really didn't discuss outlook for A&M) but I just thought it was interesting to hear the Kentucky guy saying you don't want to see A&M show up in your region

For the record I have no idea who this person was, but was very knowledgeable on the college game from the 15 minutes I heard.

I do have a lot of faith in our ability to get one bucket at the end of games. It's the first 27 buckets or so we need to get better at.

I also think we'll have a bit of an offensive boost from finally playing someone that isn't an SEC team. If someone in the tournament plays Taylor the way State or Tennessee did he'll shoot 40 free throws.

Given we took Houston to the wire last year in the tournament, and we have a much better team, this guy is correct. No one should want to see us in the tournament. We are a top 15 team in the country all year and are physical - and as noted - have one (even two with Phelps) guard that can carry the load on any given night.

Not to say we are perfect or true contenders but we are very dangerous on any given night.

I'm on the same boat of our offense looking better against non conference teams, which is why I think we get to at least the Sweet 16. The other leagues just aren't as physical as the SEC.

I do think there is some credence to the theory that SEC teams have figured out our defense. But that gives me some hope for the tourney. Hopefully that gives us an advantage over a non-conference opponent who hasn't seen our style of defense. I don't get to watch a ton of non-A&M games but my impression is our defense is somewhat unique.

But it's not like non-SEC teams don't have access to the tapes of what teams have been doing to us.

I don't think it's as much that teams have figured out our defense as it is playing two really good point guards lately combined with not having the same sense of urgency on defense.

We can talk X's and O's all day on here but we just weren't locked in or whatever you want to call it against Vandy. A step slow to everything.

What we're trying to do on defense isn't a secret. But it still works because of our physicality and intensity and that wasn't there the other night.

Also our best defender is lost right now and that doesn't help. Yeah he's blocking some shots, but he's not playing very well on either end

Yeah. I don't think we've suddenly after six years been found out, we've just been playing like **** and playing against good teams.

Though again I didn't think we were all that bad overall against Tennessee, just weren't good enough.

If the right team shows up, A&M can beat just about anyone. Just haven't seen that team in a few games. *Edit to add after reading Bob's post above: I agree on the Tenn game. Ran into a red-hot shooter in the first half who kept them in the game. A&M was very good in that game against a Final 4-quality team.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

I think we can beat anyone on a given night. I don't trust us to put together 3-4 games at the quality you need to get to an elite 8 or final 4. Can we? Yes. I'm just not confident because of how bad we can be offensively and if you combine that on a night where the other team is hot you obviously are in trouble.

The good news if we're a top five or so seed is we may not need an A or even a B game to win one or maybe two if we catch a break with an upset. I also think the short turnaround for the second game is a big advantage as long as we're not facing someone we've played before.

I think we can escape the first weekend without playing all that well. That's obviously the big advantage to banking the wins we have this season versus last season.

I don't think either Solo or Phelps, our second best perimeter defender for much of the year, are playing well defensively right now. Phelps is letting his offense impact his defense IMO.

You are right. When Phelps misses a shot or thinks he gets fouled he will often be the last one back on defense.
