Okay, let's litigate this.

2006-2007 Roster
Acie Law
Dominique Kirk
Josh Carter
Joe Jones
AK
Key Bench: Donald Sloan, Bryan Davis, Pompey, Elonu

2024-2025
Wade Taylor
Phelps
Obaseki
Payne
Coleman
Key Bench: Garcia, Hefner, Washington, Carter, Wilcher

My Brief Opining:

Law vs Taylor : Great matchup…slight edge to Law
Kirk vs Phelps: Push, both elite on ball defenders and capable scorers at times (albeit different ways)
Josh Carter vs Obaseki : Manny the better athlete but Carter's shooting was elite, Edge Carter
Jones/AK vs Payne/Coleman : great matchup, Payne the best athlete of the bunch, all mean and tough, edge Payne/Coleman

Bench: 2024-2025 seems a bit deeper in terms of impact.

Coaching: Push

2006-2007 was the better offensive team by a notable degree, though 2024-2025 ability at Offensive rebounds is unmatched.

2024-2025 team is the better defensive team, by a bit.

What a great series this would be. Lots of rock fights. Gosh…I am thinking 2006-2007 wins 4-3 because the better and more consistent shooting and ability to score but it's a close call IMO.

Honestly a big part of the series would come down to if Carter and to some extent Acie are hitting 3s.

A few of the games would be a first to 40 type feel to it.

I think Kirk would shut down most of what Phelps likes to do. Andy/Coleman/Payne would frustrate the hell out of the 07 bigs and Jones and Bryan Davis would be in foul trouble by halftime. I cringe thinking about Pompey trying to guard Payne. (might have to put Martellus Bennett and Jerrod Johnson in to spell them for a minute just for fun).

The clutch basket for basket finishes of Acie/Taylor going 1 on 1 would make for some fantastic finishes.

Ultimately i would say the 07 team in 6 thanks as the intensity of the games would not throw them off and i think Carter, Acie and maybe Donald Sloan hit enough tough shots.

For how good that team was they didn't beat that many good teams. By KenPom they beat #5 Kansas, but our next best win was #19 Louisville and then a split with #25 Texas and that's it for top 50 wins.

I still think that team is better, but this team is definitely more proven.

Also the officiating would make a big difference. That was a more physical era of college basketball and even then that team fouled an absolute ton.

How Kirk and Law got to defend Taylor and Phelps would make or break the matchup.

Throwing out the rules variables and whatever I honestly think this team wins the first game, then '07 adjusts to our weird defense and lets AK and JJ shoot more threes from the top of the key and then they win in 5 or 6.

Carter, Law, and Jones were all 40% or better three point shooters and AK and Kirk were 38 and 39%.

People forget because that team didn't really love to play that way but when teams made them they could absolutely light it up from outside.

Maybe I'm crazy but I think the current team would beat the 06-07 team. The 06-07 team was incredible but their kryptonite was athleticism in the post and the current team has tons of that. I actually think another key would be Solo on the perimeter causing fits for Law and Kirk. We loved Acie but he struggled with elite level athleticism in the NBA and his final college game (Memphis) and Solo would be providing that on defense. It would be a rock fight but the current team would win.

I think we are romanizing Acie; he was a great college player that lifted A&M basketball from nothing but he had his flaws. We do the same with Bucky.

I mean Acie was literally the national point guard of the year and a consensus first team All-American. He's not like some player we've built up inside our heads that was just kind of pretty good. (I'd argue Kirk is actually one of those guys.)

I agree with Bobinator. Kirk was an elite defender but a liability on the offensive end most of the time.

Acie was the most clutch player i have ever seen and carried the team as the best PG in the country.

Like an average guy in the NBA and Solo is a NBA level defender IMO. Sloan has a better NBA career but we always talk about Acie because of how he helped the program so much.

I didn't say he was overrated; I said Aggies lift him higher than we should. Dukies do the same with Laettner in the same way but overall was he the best Duke player in the past 20-30 years? Probably not

If you want to say Acie wasn't an elite athlete and could struggle against our wild defense which is specifically designed to cut off penetration from players like him I think you could make a fair case that that could be the case.

But what happened to him in the NBA doesn't have anything to do with how good he was at this level. DeAndre Jordan and Khris Middleton were good-but-not-great college players but elite pros. Their NBA careers don't retroactively make them better college players.

Did Roland not play on the 06/07 team? I think the 06/07 team was more scrappy and had a greater quantity of good shooters, but this year's team has more overall athleticism and depth. I give the edge to this year's team to win the series in 6 games.

Roland played but not much. 22 games, 5 mins per game.

That roster looks really impressive because when you read the names you think of the players they ultimately became but Roland, Sloan, Elonu and Davis were all freshmen and only Sloan was really part of the rotation.

What's crazy is that team had the same five starters for all 34 games, they all played 30 mins per more a game, and only two other guys played more than ten mins a game. This team has had 9 guys start games and 10 that play ten minutes or more per game.

I gotta defend Kirk he mostly wasn't needed to be an offensive force with all the firepower we had but balled out in the first 2 rounds as the 2nd leading scorer when we needed it, and consistent 40% from 3 as a 4 year starter
would kill to have him on this squad

Nah, this is new Solo. He's only fouled out once all season and is down to 3.9 fouls per 40 minutes! Far off his freshman pace of 6.1 where he was almost the most foul-prone player I've ever seen. Why "almost"? Because even as a senior Marlon's averaged 6.2 fouls per 40 minutes.
