so far

And I'm guessing we finish pretty strong with Arkansas (Saturday), Tennessee (Saturday), Vandy (Wednesday) and then #1 Auburn.

Pretty impressive we averaged 6466 in 02-03 when not a single person showed for a conference game.

But I was told on the Georgia game thread that our attendance was bad and was better during the Gillespie and Turgeon years.

Weird that a highly ranked team playing a lot of ranked teams helps attendance.

Pretty sure this is in response to the thread about how bad attendance has been.

But all the old people wanted to complain about the students not showing up! What will they do with their time now?

To be fair, whoever was in charge of counting attendance probably just stopped doing their job after the new year.

We will finish over 10,000 average for the second time ever. It is likely that we will approach the 2007-08 number

Thank you for posting this. I really think that people just like to complain and when they can't find something to mad about on the court they have to look off of it.

i have not personally complained about the attendance it seems pretty packed on tv for most games. what i will point out is the student body is quite a bit larger than it was during the BCG years. and yet during th 06-07 season the attendance was over a 1000 more per game. not sure what that really means but it seems this team would deserve equal support as any of those teams.

Actually the Student sections have been routinely packed. It's the season ticket holder sections that have been hit or miss.

If we average 10,000 this year, that means 1 in 4 seats at Reed are empty.

As pointed out, the better the team gets, the better the attendance.

2006 - 2010 was better what are you looking at? Reed also added seats and changed the official capacity from 12k something to 13k something. Almost every single conference game was a sellout. I stand by it.

I'm going to guess it ends up at an average over 9800 .

We should probably do non conference home and homes with UH or Baylor replacing games like ACU or Southern. That would help the average. Your'e a lot more likely to draw local interest among students, former students, and locals (incl opponents fans) that way imo. Another idea, play Sam Houston St or SFA or Texas St instead of Southern.

Attendance would be better if we prioritized selling the arena to local customers, but its probablu not as lucrative as selling season tickets with big donations to people who live hours away from the arena.
JJxvi

We also have to realize that the number we have is essentially paid attendance. So "students not showing up" is reflected in there, but the arena may also be empty because season ticket holders didnt show up and/or couldnt resell or give away their tickets, but in the number on the box score that usually still counts regardless

I don't think any sports team/university prioritizes ticket sales based on home zip code/address. If someone that lives hours away wants to purchase season tickets and pay the donation, then it is what it is. Especially if it is based on priority points. They have somewhat earned the right to purchase tickets based on the current system.

If we sell out the remaining 4 home games (14k)
Avg Season attendance will be 10,760.
Avg Conference attendance 12,520.

Vandy many not have the biggest crowd, but should break the season record.

You're wrong, but I applaud the willingness to be objectively wrong but believe it anyway.

2007: Best year in school history, novelty was at an all time high, basically a wire-to-wire top ten team:

Kansas State: 11,358
Oklahoma State 13,187
Oklahoma: 13,048
Iowa State: 11,148
Texas: 13,196
Texas Tech: 12,926
Baylor: 13,051
Missouri: 13,203

6/8 were probably official sellouts. 4/6 were on Saturdays.

2008 was our high water year for attendance and there was a big bump in season ticket sales and they count tickets sold, not actual butts in seats. But even in 2008, here are our 8 home conference games:

Colorado: 12,634
Baylor: 12, 234
Texas: 13,555
Oklahoma: 13,158
Oklahoma State: 13,584
Nebraska: 11,207
Texas Tech: 10,032
Kansas: 12,054

That's 3/8 that were probably official sellouts, and only Texas was a midweek game. Maybe we want to count Colorado as a sellout, that was also on a Saturday.

2009:
Baylor: 9.537
Oklahoma: 12,720
Texas Tech: 10,273
Oklahoma State: 11,178
Kansas State; 10,367
Texas: 11,321
Iowa State: 9,701
Missouri: 13,007

1/8, the final game of the season on a Saturday

2010:
Nebraska: 9.628
Oklahoma: 11,109
Colorado: 10,316
Texas Tech: 13,648
Baylor: 13,021
Kansas: 13,657
Texas: 13,717
Oklahoma STate: 11,488

4/8 out in 2010, the only one on a weekday was Kansas.

So from 2007-2010, which I think we can agree is the high water mark for Aggie Basketball, we still only sold out 14/32 games, and of those 14, 10 were on Saturdays.

Was attendance better? Yes. But were we packing the arena every single night no matter who the opponent was or what we were ranked? No.

We seem to be capped at just shy of 13k now. I know we drew slightly more than 14k for UK in 2022.

I'm not sure if that's official or not but it sure seems to be.

02/21/23 Tennessee (11) W 68 63 12,989

03/04/23 Alabama (2) W 67 61 12,989

2. The attendance the past two games has been embarrassing

Embarrassing to whom? On TV the crowd looked great and engaged. It really doesn't make that much of a difference if the balcony is full or not. I'd love it to be and I'm sure it will be mostly full on Saturday and for most of the remaining home games.

I'm not talking about prioritizing based on where you live. I'm talking about marketing the team and trying to sell tickets to the local market. Someone who lives in Bryan, TX is way more likely to show up to see us play Vanderbilt on a Wednesday evening than someone who is willing to drive from Houston or Dallas. However, there are more people in Dallas and Houston and Austin, etc with enough money to pay the prices for season tickets. The whole way it all works (as a former season ticket holder who went to games from Houston) is that donors paid for the tickets, and the local community took advantage of the secondary market from people who couldnt go to games they already purchased.

Most places where college basketball is a big deal that people go to, it actually is much more of the community's team and not so much like big University football like our setup is.

I'm all for the student ticket point system at this point. The more sporting events you attend, the better football seats you get.
