It's interesting because we actually have an unusual number of common opponents because of many Big Ten teams we played and how many SEC teams they played.

Alabama - Purdue was +9 on a nuetral court, we were -6 at home
Ole Miss - They were +2 on a nuetral court, we were +1 away
Rutgers - they were +18 away, we were +4 on a neutral court
Oregon - They were +7 away, we were -10 on a neutral court
Ohio State - They were -8 at home, we were +14 at home

We'll also both have played Auburn, who they got hammered by on a neutral court.
So again, when metrics, common opponents, and analytics struggle to figure out which team is more deserving of a higher ranking, head to head, is a clear separator. But according to people filling out polls, playing the game doesn't matter.

It would be fine if it didn't matter. But this a sport where a group of people get together an analyze metrics to determine who gets what seed and where they go. And we have direct evidence from recent years that these people are often hugely wrong in their assessment of teams. I have zero faith our head to head against Purdue, assuming we have similar resumes at the end of the season, will lead to us getting a favorable seed / bracket than them.

Seeding teams and ranking teams are different though. At least to me they are. A poll is very more "in the moment" and I'd factor in recent play a lot more in how good I think a team currently is. That's where I can really see the argument for Purdue is their recent run and how they've just smashed some people.

But seeding is a resume-based process. Your first game matters as much as the last one.

I don't disagree with you that who knows what these idiots will do when locked in a room together, I've said a number of times on here how much I hate how the selection process works.

You realize that no one on the AP poll or the coaches' poll is on the NCAA tournament committee, right?!?!

You realize that "a group of people don't get together" to establish the weekly rankings, right???

And you realize you are upset about them being ranked 7 vs 8, which would lead to two 2 seeds, is not really a factor?

Right?!?!

There's still a lot of basketball to be played, some of you people are stupid.

I don't think anyone is that bent out of shape about it, it's just something to talk about.

I was just pushing back on the idea that it's "laughable" that Purdue is ahead of us. I think it's a defensible position.

Purdue ahead of us is definitely not "laughable". Debatable, absolutely. But it's really close and shouldn't have some people so fired up about it. Extremely similar resumes.

They have the best win (Current AP #2)
We have the H2H
We both have wins over teams that the other lost to (Oregon, Ohio State)
We both have common wins (Rutgers, Ole Miss)
No bad losses

I'd probably give us the nod, but wouldn't hold it against the voters if they chose Purdue. They are one of the hottest teams in the country right now.

There's also a human element of trust in Purdue. We're talking about a team whose recent tourney seeds have been 1-1-3-4-projected bubble but likely out-3-2-4

People see Purdue get hot and think "here we go again."

Hope we can stay on the same seed line as Purdue. Zero interest in having a shot at seeing them until San Antonio.

My take on the Purdue #7, A&M #8 debate

1) It is ridiculous we are debating it because it could not matter less. I assure you, no one will remember or care who was #7 in early February

2) While i would personally give the nod to A&M based on H2H, as others have noted there is a defensible position to rank Purdue higher based on predictive metrics

3) Predictive metrics needs a rebranding - people hear that and think its Jay Bilas and Dick Vitale got together and gave their opinion on who would win a hypothetical game. All predictive metrics is just aggregating data on how good you are by how well you play and against whom. So, the computer models have returned a pretty resounding gap that Purdue is a better team when all the data from the entire season is considered, eliminating human bias.

4) The AP vote isnt 1 guy. 12 pollsters had A&M ranked ahead of Purdue

5) Most pollsters are lazy, it is human nature to not lower a team that is consistently winning big and beating good teams, in mid January, A&M was ahead of Purdue, and then we lost 2 games in a row in the same time period that they blew out Rutgers on the road, beat Nebraska by 40, won by double digits at Washington and then won at Oregon (a team that beat A&M). It would have been a near unanimous decision to move Purdue ahead of A&M at that time. Since that time Purdue has continued to win and we lost to Texas.

6) I swear 80% of the posts i see on here or on X during the games talk about how bad A&M is, clearly not at an elite level, nowehere near a top 10 team yada yada, because we are watching the games and seeing the warts....but then we expect an outsider to not notice those and put us ahead of a team that has lost 1 time this year and is pounding teams by 30 most games.

7) go back and read #1 again. This does not matter. at all. the committee process is very specific to compare 2 teams at a time on a seed list and ensure things like head to head are considered for similar resumes. relax, i assure you there is nothing to get worked up about...

The real issue will be if we have similar runs the rest of the year and they end up a 2 seed and we end up a 3. But the predictive issue is we still play 2 teams above us, that we would be expected to lose to. They probably don't have anyone left they are expected to lose to.

Purdue is still expected to lose at Michigan at Michigan State, and at Illinois.

Ags have been ranked in the first 15 polls this year. We have done this twice before, in Turge year 1 07-08 we made it through the first 16 polls before falling out. In 06-07 we were ranked in all 19 polls, which is the only time we have ever been ranked from start to finish in our history.

This is the latest in the season that we have been ranked in the top 10 since 06-07, which was the only other time in our history we have been ranked in the top 10 this late in a season. That team finished #9.

06-07 reach AP #6 in 4 polls. We lost the first two times we reached the position, and then made it to week 2 before we lost the third time we reached #6. This history has seared into our minds the collective reluctance to reach #6. However, both the 15-16 and 17-18 sweet 16 teams peaked at #5 before February and also lost the same week we reached #5. The 06-07 team peaked at #6 its final time in the week 15 2/12 poll (our current poll).

In summary, this is an all time good Texas A&M basketball team by any metric.

We could lose to Arkansas to keep those fears at bay.

It's perfect timing for that number 6 ranking because our first game next week is at miss st, a game we could definitely lose
