Haha, Buzz with the mini-lecture for Mizzou college journalism students (who were actually quite good) at the end is so Buzz.

"Are you actually gonna type this, or just record it?" "Yeah I'll type it."

Love the last minute of that conference. Buzz is a genuine guy that builds everyone up around him. Great leader to young men! Well done Buzz and way to represent A&M.

I agree, Buzz is such a different type of coach...I support Buzz even when he wasn't winning big.

The problem with winning big @ A&M, others may try to poach him.

I hope he stays @ A&M

The amount of respect he shows to opposing coaches and schools is really quite incredible, and rare in high level sports. How many coaches have you ever seen wear an opposing team's fundraiser/charity tshirt to a press conference to help raise awareness for them? As a fan and former student I find it rather humbling.

Not nearly enough NIL money in A&M basketball to keep Buzz I suspect.

It's sounds dumb but I honestly sometimes think of how Buzz speaks to people when dealing with someone I don't want to deal with. His respect he shows people and wanting to help anyone even if he doesn't know them succeed is unmatched. Do I think he's the best possible basketball coach? Nope, but I'd prefer he stay our coach and fully understand why his players seem that they'd take a bullet for the guy bc I think he do the same for them.

If we don't do what's necessary to keep him it will be a gigantic blunder by this administration.

buzz has figured out the secret sauce.

humble yourself before the lord. he actively tries to be humble and to shower praise and gratitude to everyone else but himself.

it is very unique in today's world and a great lesson do our players who go through his program.

I have no idea if Buzz is gonna return here or what but he certainly shocked Marquette fans when he left them for Virginia Tech. Coming here from VT made sense but he had just gotten it rolling there too. If he does end up leaving here for some place like Indiana I believe it would have nothing to do with our administration or what we offered, it would be just Buzz being Buzz and onto the next challenge.

I would be really surprised if he left but with Buzz you never know and 6 years has been his limit in the past.

In the post-Shelby era, two coaches have left A&M for greener pastures: Mark Turgeon and Billy Gillispie. Turgeon seemed to always be complaining and looking for a way out of College Station. On the other hand, I think there are lots of similarities between Buzz and BCG. Both are from small north Texas towns, coached the same 2004 - 2006 A&M staff, emphasize team defense, and recruit players that were overlooked by the elite programs.

Would Buzz leave A&M if, say, Kentucky came calling? Maybe, maybe not. Personally I doubt it.

BCG was also looking to leave, he flirted with several jobs.

I'm not sure Turge was actively looking to leave, if he was then it was pretty quiet or under the radar.

I just don't believe turge was a good personality fit.

Always consider the home life - how old are Buzz's kid and things...easier to uproot as empty nester I would think. Also - he's in the best basketball conference in the country.

The perception (at least around here, and to the best of my recollection) is that Turge wanted to be at a "basketball school" like Kansas. The support at A&M never really grew and football was always king. The Maryland jump made sense for him, in a way.

No clue about Buzz but I feel like that was always a thing with Turge, and since we never made it to the second weekend of the tournament - and in fact had to sneak in several times in his tenure - the support was never really going to grow that substantially.

Yes it made sense just like it made sense for BCG to leave. We hero workshop one and hate the other. We ignore the fact that BCG was looking to leave because it doesn't fit our hero worship narrative. If the Maryland coach didn't retire so late after the season ended who knows if they hire Turge, maybe they hire another person that was hired sooner in the process that ended up at another school

The whole Turge era is interesting from a collective memory standpoint. It's like everyone remembers it differently.

I think he hurt himself in year 1 when he remarked something along the lines of when we win it was because of BCG players and when we lose it's because of his coaching. And at times he was right, we lacked some support when it came to attendence.

IMO i think the Turge era started to end when Tobi died in that car wreck. I just think Turge thought he'd be a great player for him. But that's my opinion

Yeah that was a dumb thing to say publicly even if it was true to some degree. It's just interesting to look back. I think overall people tend to remember those years more fondly than they were at the time. But at the same time people act like the Turgeon hate was more widespread than it really was.

Some folks also forget how much Byrne's ego played into that whole six year series of events from BCG leaving to BK getting hired.

Yeah, the "no-flippin'-win situation" quote.

If I could sum up that era in one repeated experience, it'd be convincing friends to come to a big game (Kansas, etc), experiencing a great crowd, and then not winning said game. It's like we could never get real fan momentum going when it counted. We'd beat Texas at home, but go 8-8 in conference or something like that.

I loved Aggie basketball and went to every game I could but we were always a fringe top-25 team, after BCG's last year, and casual fans want to see a win streak or some trophies or something.

Good point about BB. Also it seemed to me we hit a revenue issue, IE the salary for top MBB would get to the salary we paid Sherman or even higher. I don't think people remember the revenue constraints we had in B12 and old Kyle
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I think that's partly what I mean by ego. I think people sort of made up the constraints, I think it was more Byrne thinking he was the smartest guy in the room and thinking he's not going to get into a bidding war when he can just go find another good coach. And then he got salty about losing coaches to basketball schools and hired one he thought we could actually keep.

The Oregon saga was quite public and talked about here.

As I remember, he visited campus in Eugene and had an offer before deciding to stay here.

I really love Buzz. I'm very glad his hard work ethic is succeeding. I'm glad his team sees it.

He's the right kind of fit for A&M.

I wish we had gotten to see Turgeon (or even Spinelli) coach the 2011-12 team.

All of his post-game pressers are worth a listen, but his pressers at Missouri always have a special message for those journalism students. Guessing he is probably their favorite visiting coach.

That is a really good listen for the following reasons:

1. He explains why he is wearing essentially a Mizzou shirt. Good stuff!

2. He is really genuine and says I am not going to answer that question because it will reveal our strategy.

3. Says what a tactician Mizzou's coach is. Really complimentary of opposing coach.

4. As stated, took the time to give advice to a Mizzou journalism student. Who takes the time in a PC to do this?!

Buzz is a special guy.
