I wanted to start a thread publicly thanking a texas university for opening a new basketball arena in 2022.

For the youngins I wanted to share a brief bit of history about the haunted building that was the Frank Erwin Center. Did they use some kind of magic to curse the building against us in 1988? Do we hate the city of Austin so much that we just had bad vibes when we played there? Is it mostly due to our basketball history being terrible throughout the 90's and into the 2000's? WHO CAN SAY.

"The Drum" opened in November of 1977, with Texas winning the first two matchups in the new arena in '78 and '79. Then, the Aggies owned the place. Winning seven out of the next eight from 1980 to 1987.

But then it became an absolute house of horrors for us.

After winning at the Erwin Center in 1987, we only won there one other time and lost 24 times. Put another way, we have one win in Austin in the last 37 years.

Who was the lone coach to accomplish the feat? BCG? Turge? Maybe the rogue early BK team? It was not, they all went a combined 0-8. It was the legendary Melvin Watkins in 2002. Not quite yet at the height of his losing powers, the '02 Ags won three conference games, but two of them were road games (Iowa State.)

So here's to the Moody Center, a place that the Aggies have never lost a game!

I was at that game with some of my buddies. Bernard King went bonkers at the drum.

I was watching that game on TV in 2002. I will never forget the look on Rick Barnes' face afterward holding the horns up. He looked physically sick.

To be fair, that dude always looks physically sick, but I get your point.

We're going to win on Saturday. Once they pulled it out against Mizzou on Tuesday, I felt a lot better about it with them not being quite as desperate. Buzz is a far better coach than Terry and Wade/Phelps are due for a bounce back after last night.

A&M was already a lock. Win against t.u. and we are a lock in the NCAA Tournament? He doesn't think he's talking about football, does he?

I don't know if he has an exact formula for it but it's basically "if the season played out from here 1,000 times these teams make the tournament every time" kind of lock.

It doesn't really have anything to do with Texas. It's just us winning another road game that basically puts us into lock status.

To each his own, but when I was doing projections, I never called that a lock. To me, a lock was someone who can lose out and still make the tournament. Given where we are in the calendar, there are currently no locks.

That wasn't my exact definition of it, but more along the lines of what I'd call high bubble. In other words, a team that most likely will make the tournament given the likely outcome of future games, but needing no help from others. Low bubble meant they needed help (other teams' wins and/or losses, etc.). Everyone (at least, who we're discussing here) was pretty much on one of these until at least March. In some years, the ones with only a loss or two, very late Feb., especially if they had only tough teams on the road remaining.

Obviously, these were MY terms and no one is obligated to use them. However, I felt like there was more precision to these terms. Others think its overkill...until a team collapses. Or a team gets hot and steals a bid.

Yeah I also prefer to wait until "this team could lose every game and still make it in" to call a team a lock. He even says that the lock teams need to win a couple more games to be actual locks, but this is his lock formula so whatever.

I'd call these teams "in barring disaster."

Yeah somebody asked him about Wisconsin and he said they went 3 and 8 after they got to his LOCK status last year and they were a.....5 seed. Lol. So yeah, I would consider us in with another big road win.

Even though it might be correct it's hard for me to believe that if we beat the sips and then lose the final 12 games in a row that we would be in the tournament. Guess it depends on how lock is defined.

He is saying we will win at least twice more to be a lock after beating Texas.

Isn't it refreshing that our team is considered this good this late in the season ? I've always said that I want to be one of these "Kansas type" teams that is playing for top 4 seeds not playing to get in.

We actually have so many good wins and nobody terrible enough on the future schedule that they'd have to think real hard about leaving us out right now if we did lose the rest of the season. I wouldnt want to test it or anything. We'd have to not just lose but get blown out enough to plunge our NET.

Being kept out at like 7-11 or whatever also assumes we arent still winning games like Ole Miss on the road too.
