Hide your wives and girlfriends everybody, we're headed to Oxford to take on Chris Beard and his talented Ole Miss basketball team! Tonight we have a late start at 8pm on national television on ESPN2 with a ranked on ranked matchup against the AP Number 16 and NET 13 Ole Miss. It's time we steal won on the road!!!!
The Aggies start a stretch of games where 4 out of the next 5 opponents are on the road starting with Ole Miss, then in Austin on Saturday, before a home matchup with Oklahoma, then back to back on the road at South Carolina and Mizzou. Getting some road wins here should be huge for our NET ranking and conference standings. So these next 5 will be pivotal before we end February with 4 of 5 at home!
The metrics really love Ole Miss. Their defensive numbers are outstanding. They are one of the best teams in the nation in creating turnovers and 3rd in the nation in assist to turnover ratio and a top ten team in steals. So we're going to face a squad tonight that's priority is turning us over and getting baskets in transition. They are also only giving 65 points a game as we are. This will be a fun defensive battle! However, they did lose the rebounding battle by 22 to Miss State in their only sec loss this past weekend. That may be the part of the game we exploit.
Offensively, they do have a balanced scoring attack, but they are led in scoring and attempts by #3 Sean Pedulla who averages 14.2 shooting 38% from the three. They do have 5 other scorers average more than 9 points a game. They are a great and efficient 3 point shooting team so we can't let them got hot at home. They shoot 35% on the season.
We have been playing lots of teams with a lottery pick or a dominant scorer. Although Pedulla takes a lot of shots, they like to move the ball and spread it around. They don't have the size that Bama and Kentucky have so that will be refreshing. Their starting forwards are 6'9 and 6'8, similar to a style we play. This should hopefully allow Payne to have a solid game and possibly get their forwards Malik Dea and Jaemyn Brakefield in foul trouble! Although I will warn you, that they shoot free throws at a much better clip than we do, so brace yourselves lol.
Hopefully with more practices and a game under his belt, Wade Taylor will see more time on the court and provide us with an offensive spark. Ole Miss has a solid defense so we'll need to play smart and get to the foul line (and hopefully shoot more than 60% from the free throw line lol). This will be a tall task on the road, but I like the matchup particularly because of the rebounding stats and the fact that they don't have enormous length to overwhelm us like Bama and Kentucky did. This 5 game stretch is pivotal to our season, if we can start it out with a big road win, we can keep our eyes set on a top seed! It's time we get a huge ranked conference win! Let's go BTHO ole miss!!!!!!!!!!!!
