Top Ten. Primetime. ESPN. Undefeated in Conference Play. Oats vs Buzz. Texas A&M vs Alabama. Reed Arena. 7pm. IIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTSSSSSSS TIIIIIIIIMMMEEEEEEEEEEE! FORRRRRRR THE MAIN EVENT OF THE EVENING!
Gather your friends, gather your neighbors, gather your in laws, grab a beer, grab an Aggie dog, grab some popcorn and settle in for undefeated SEC basketball. Two top ten teams. Only one leaves Saturday night undefeated!
Your fightin' Texas A&M Aggies and your rowdy fans welcome #5 Alabama Crimson Tide led by consensus preseason player of the #1 Mark Sears into Reed Arena in what's set to be an electric atmosphere for a great basketball game. Saturday night will feature two differing styles. You have the high flying fast paced Alabama offense vs the stingy physical punch you in the mouth (unless you're #2 for Oklahoma) type of defense!
Wade Taylor IV is listed as out for the game. You want him for a game like this, but you don't want to risk anything, especially if we want to play deep in March! I'll keep updating this thread if we learn anything new.
Alabama is averaging over 90 points per game, whereas we only give up 63.5! they have 4 players average in double figures led by Sears' 18.5. They would have 5 but one of their starters Latrell Wrightsell is out for the season after tearing his achilles in December. Bama has a talented backcourt to run along side Sears, in guards #00 Labaron Philon, and their 3 point shooter #2 Aden Holloway. However, Bama also likes to run a lot of its offense through Grant Nelson, who averages 12.6 points and 8.7 rebounds! Bama has some good size that are great at clogging up the paint and grabbing boards. Nelson is an agile 6'11, and they also have 6'11 #11 Clifford Omoruyi who starts along side Nelson but only averages 18 minutes a game.
They are a unique team with a trio of guards who can score at every level, but with guys inside who can impose their size. They are a really really strong defensive rebounding team, even out rebounding us. But part of that is they play fast and their opponents will take a lot of shots as well. So the rebounding battle will be fun to battle, they'll try to limit our offensive rebounds. For as much as they score, they're surprisingly not that great of a 3 point shooting team, just at .321 to our .314 and they shoot under 70% from the free throw line.
As many have posted, it will be a tough matchup. Bama will be a difficult team to over power on the rebounds, but we'll need to keep them off the glass as much as we can! We'll need Payne and Coleman and Garcia to have a very strong presence inside and keep Bama's forwards off the glass. We'll need to play second half ou/tu defense for 40 minutes against their guards! But what scares me is how their guards can drive and slip it to one of their big men and they way we play help defense scares me so we'll have to disrupt their passing lanes and play face up defense!
Offensively, I think we're going to really need to have an outside shot going! Hopefully shooting more than .333 from deep. We'll see if Phelps continues with the hot hand. Hopefully he can attack the basketball early and find a rythym. I think we really need to have Wilcher contribute. We keep trying to force him a 3 shot, I say we should let one come off an offensive board or just through the flow of the game. If Wilcher/Hefner/Carter/Garcia/Solo can combine for 6-8 threes, I think we can be in this! Grant Nelson is a monster offensively but I think he's soft on defense, we also need to feed the ball inside more. Payne and Coleman can bully him. Bama does play with two bigs often so I think we'll see more of our bigs than we did with Oklahoma! We'll see how we adjust with them keying in on Phelps, maybe some pick and roll or inside out!
With or without Taylor, we are still a very good basketball team! Hopefully we can dictate the game and play our style. Get to Reed and will them to victory. Bama hasn't won in Reed Arena in nearly 10 years, and they're gonna have to wait another year or two for that to come true! Wear white, pack Reed, and yell loud! Everyone reading this post loves this program and everyone reading this wants to see A&M thrive as a basketball school. All those rough years, all those bubble watching moments, we wished to be in games like this. It's time we show everyone that we belong with the big dogs and that whoever walks into Reed Arena is in for a tough ass game. Let's go BTHO alabama.
