Just a stray thought for a Monday but thought these last two games really capture why so many of us liked this team coming into the season.

Against Texas Tech, a top 25 caliber team (albeit without Toppin), Garcia, one of our best players had an uncharacteristically terrible game, but we were able to overcome it and win anyway. And then against Purdue, another one of our cornerstone players, this time Solo, was absolutely killing us. No big deal, go to the bench and bring in a guy that goes for 16 and 9 with two steals and get some contributions from Hefner and Carter.

Not sure we overcome either of those performances last year, but this year we not only overcome them, we win both games fairly easily. (Purdue drew close there at the end with some wild threes but still never had the ball with a chance to tie it.) Our win percentage never went below 75% the last ten minutes of the game against Purdue or last seven minutes of the game against Tech.

Regarding the front-court, I have to give Buzz the credit. His development of Solo, Garcia and Coleman has really made this team a lot better. Along with Payne, anyone combination of the 4 can be a solid front-count against most teams.

And vs Purdue, we had Manny making the free throws down the stretch with Wade
on the bench. We also had Phelps playing his best game and mostly under control.
So, a little versatility with our 3 guards.

I still think we haven't come close to playing our best basketball! And that's a good thing! We're slowly reaching our potential, and hopefully we find it come March! We haven't had a game where multiple guys are knocking down 3 or 4+ threes! And I think our defense is only going to get better!

Offensively, I agree. If we're going to take down someone like Auburn we're probably going to need an uncommon performance from several guys offensively even if we're able to slow them down with our defense.

That game should be a fun one. Senior day for half the roster.

Not sure how much better our defense can really get though.

i think this is a definitive strength of this team. it's depth/ roster diversity. we have multiple guys who can be rearranged in many different ways to allow us to find the right matchup to exploit. our team is also veteran laden which helps a lot when making changes on the floor real time.

The depth of our roster will be huge in SEC play

Agree

It's already paying off with how we finish games. Going to pay off even more once the grind of SEC play starts.

Lots of interchangeable parts on defense: guys can switch and not find themselves in mismatches defensively, which is really helping our 3 pt defense

I think the real wild card in our line up is Payne. If he can build on his Purdue performance, or even consistently be half as good as he was against Purdue, it could take this team to another level.

No doubt having more options to accomplish team goals is a good thing. This is Buzz's best A & M team so far and I hope that thought continues to prevail. SEC play is going to be a meat grinder .

If Buzz could get McDermott and Lee able to eat 5 mins each per game without a huge drop off that could be a huge plus as well. They probably aren't there yet and experimentation time is nearly over but it could be huge if he could pull it off.

I think the catastrophic curve ball that Marbles dealt us last year is hard not to overlook. Last year was a massive adjustment and the Ags still did well.

I think we are seeing in this season what could have been last season.

Look at some teams like TN. They are down to 8 scholarship players (per their radio announcer - had one team just leave the team). They're only 7 deep on those who actually get playing time. That will hurt them later on in the conference schedule.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Great observations. We need to bring more Payne however.

I think buzz and Payne are working on that next gear. I don't know if it came through the TV but Payne played very aggressively and almost angry against HBU.

We're 10-deep without McDermott and Lee. They have likely played their last minutes this season, well after ACU at least. There are not enough minutes to get them 5 each if you ask me.

I want Wade back, healthy. Garcia too, for that matter.

It's been all radio silence on those two (understandably).

But I'm worried that Wade might not be 100% when the sips come to town.

Despite our depth, we MUST have a healthy Taylor for this team to reach its potential (which is extremely high).

Your'e probably right. Maybe 5 mins combined. I'm just thinking about games where key players are getting worn down or in foul trouble and how nice it would be to plug someone in without them being total dead space, and also the Big Dance where you are playing 2 games in 3 days. We already know 2 of our key players are dinged up or worn down.
