Obviously we put the pedal to the medal late last year - that along with Manny's evolved role really seemed to be the difference

Do we think that sticks? Not sure why it shouldn't played their best with some added pace. Haven't heard Buzz comment on it yet

I think this is a more complicated question than it would typically be because of how we were forced to play last year.

We were so bad at shooting last year that a lot of times our best bet was to just take the first decent look, especially if the defense wasn't set yet, because it increased our likelihood of getting the offensive rebound and it was unlikely we were going to eventually get a better look anyway.

If Payne is a true low post scoring threat like we all hope he is, then I think you could see us be a little more deliberate in offensive sets this year, especially if someone other than Taylor proves they can hit open threes at a decent clip. If you have those threats, then it makes sense to work the ball and try to find angles. Last year our offense basically became Wade, Boots and Manny just charging at the basket and hoping for the best depending on which matchup we liked best.

But the real key to the tempo is going to be our defense. We were mid-pack at forcing live ball turnovers which is what really juices the tempo.

If we offensive rebound like we did last year there is no reason we should not be significantly better. But honestly, let's hope we don't have to be on the offensive glass as much lol. If Phelps can fill in Boots' iso/drive game that we will definitely miss, the sky is the limit for this team.

Trying to find a good way to word this because I don't think Phelps is better than Boots in the true sense of the word, but I think Phelps and Taylor are going to be a better fit together as a combo than Boots and Taylor were at times last year.

So…what do you call a play style that is overcome by reality? Is that like when a plan makes contact with the enemy…I.e. not surviving that contact???

Complicated indeed. I think the biggest factor in Aggies' style of play was the lack of Julius Marbles. Without out a post, we became a tip-it-to-the-edge rebounding team. This lead to the odd stat of being one of the highest offensive rebounding teams in the country despite having a small team on the court. AND, the only way to have an offensive board is you first have to miss! We missed quite a few shots.

Hopefully with better shooting and a post presence we can make the basket the first time.

Will be an interesting season not like last year, but better!

here is what i observed last year. when they pushed the tempo they got more open looks and shot significantly better from behind the arc. it wasn't even close. so my hope is they will push the ball with the guards we have and athletic forwards.

This is what i mean by complicated though. Were the shots better, and thus the shooting better, because the tempo was faster, or were we able to play at a faster tempo because the the shooting was better? And how much of either was Manny-dependent?

I think we're going to be a pretty flexible team on offense, I don't know that we'll have a dominant tempo, it's going to depend a lot on our post offense and and how we're shooting on the wing.

Defense is what's going to make or break this deal. Last year some of our fastest games were fast because our defense got absolutely shredded (Alabama.) Though toward the end of the season we had a few games where I think you could argue that even though the tempo cost us on defense at times, it was an overall net positive (Kentucky, Nebraska.)

Isn't Phelps more a defensive stopper with a point guard distribute the ball mentality?

He was more of a scorer at SMU and didn't have Caruso's assist rate, but I imagine we'd like him to play that table setter role here more. Hard to say for sure what he's going to look like here because the role is different and our overall talent is so much better than his last team. He does like to attack the basket though. I actually think he looks a lot like a more polished but less athletic Manny in the clips I've seen. Except he can't shoot.

I don't think we need him to shoot. From the highlights that I saw, I liked that he tends to drive to the hoop, but I'm hoping he makes enough outside shots that teams have to respect him. Otherwise, they're gonna pack the paint. I'm hoping for a quick adjustment in how he adapts to Buzz's style, but I feel like he's going to be a good get for us.

He's not going to shoot at a high clip unless he just has a crazy outlier season. His numbers are what they are.

But I'm not worried about them packing the paint against him because he'll just drive downhill at them and either score or force them to guard him. He's a little bigger and more athletic than boots, but more importantly he's not as dominant-handed as Boots is from the clips I've seen and he also passes in traffic a little better.

You can have a guard on the floor that can't shoot as long as your others can, especially if he can distribute the ball well and is a threat to drive, which hopefully is the case this year but wasn't the case a lot of the time last year.

Buzz looks like a new hire at the start of literally every year. I hope that UCF loss was a fluke but history tells us otherwise.

I like when people have just decided something is true.

Sure, last year we won four of our first five games against top 100 opponents, including one of them eventually being a top ten team, with the one loss being a game where two starters got hurt, but sure, we start out bad every year.
