Williams says recent consistency positioned A&M to upset Tennessee
On Saturday night, Texas A&M picked up another top-10 win at home, defeating Tennessee to move to 6-4 in conference play. The Aggies' head coach, Buzz Williams, joined Monday's edition of TexAgs Radio to discuss the teams' recent success.
Key notes from Buzz Williams's interview
- I don't want to justify losing at all. I think it's the longest period, since after Thanksgiving, that we’ve been able to practice with our team.
- I understand when good players miss games and the impact it has, but I think when you’re on a team, you realize the negative impact. You miss them when they don't play games, but you also miss them in all the practices leading up to the games.
- The last two losses, at the buzzer at Arkansas and then losing by three to Ole Miss, there has been consistency in the practices and the games of the people that have practiced and played. I think that is the first time that has happened in the last eight to ten weeks and hopefully, there is some growth happening because we have all been able to be together.
- If you miss five games, then you probably miss 15 practices, and that's a long time.
- I think Tyrece Radford could have played against Houston Christian. I told him that he couldn’t. He wasn’t practicing full time, and I think that having seven more days, including Christmas break, in preparation for Prairie View, I thought was best long term.
- Radford is a very rhythmic player, and he is a very consistent person. He is not playing video games until 2 a.m. He's not running all over the place. He is kind of an old man. Not just in his last year but ever since I’ve met him. He’s been raised that way, and when you’re never in your rhythm and can’t practice and train, 15 practices in five games is a lot.
- Has Radford’s game changed? No, I don't think so. Is he in a good groove because of the consistency? I would contribute most of it to his ability health-wise. He’s back and comfortable because of the practices and the games.
- I do think we play hard, and that is a part of the success. I think they are playing hard, and knowing why they play hard, whenever everyone is on the floor together. I think you can see some of that on both sides of the floor.
- I thought Saturday was one of the better performances, better atmospheres and better games we’ve had in the five years we’ve been here.
