Nobody thinks Wade is better than Acie as a senior. Not yet anyway.

Acie would have won National POY going away if not for Kevin Durant. Taylor isn't anywhere near that level...yet.

The 2006-2007 team was a wonderful team but not unassailable in a GOAT debate.

They went 13-3 in conference losing twice to Tech, were upset the first game of Big 12 tournament and yes they were good enough to be in a Final Four but also almost didn't make it out of the second round escaping an upset by 6-seed Louisville by a razor's edge.

Comparing them to this year's team, I think this year team is a bit deeper but 2006-2007 had a senior All-American PG who was a NBA lottery pick (pick 11). To me that is the one key edge to 2006-2007, cause I'd could easily argue Dennis is every bit as good as Kirk, Radford as impactful as Carter, equally cohesive strong culture teams with great coaching, etc. oh, and down the bench Hefner >>>> Logan Lee.

Now This team does have an elite PG in Wade who will be first team All-SEC, is the best PG in the SEC, and only Miller at Bama has scored more points than Wade in conference games. I hope most Aggie fans are coming to that realization. Wade isn't just good, he's GREAT even with the handful of No! plays each game.

but no Wade not yet an Acie level which few college PGs are though he has been delivering more often Law level performances (Saturday the latest). And he is only a sophomore!

As has been mentioned on this thread, let's see how this post-season goes. Then we will have yet more data to come back and debate this.

The wonderful thing is that there is even any debate going. that this thread even exists. It means this has been a special particularly memorable team like a select few in seasons before.

The backcourts are arguably close, but the 07 front court is way better. Joe would have Marble in foul trouble during pregame warmups.

Yeah, no disrespect to this year's team but I would take Acie's senior year team over this year's team.

Fair or not, you're not in the conversation unless you win a couple games in the dance. But they've got a chance.
They are 'in the mix' right now.

Best 2 teams in 2000's were the 2006-2007 team (Acie Law All-American PG led) and then the 2015-2016 team with Caruso, House, Jones senior trio plus a nice looking freshman class (Tyler Davis, Gilder, Hogg, etc.).

I'd rank them in that order.

Both the above teams made the Sweet Sixteen.

The former went 13-3 in the Big 12 and lost first game in Big 12 tournament. Famously the day after that upset loss Gillispie cancelled practice, telling the players 'The next lost will be your last'.

The latter team was SEC Co-Champion with 13-5 regular season SEC record and made the champ game in the SEC Title game (lost to Kentucky).

This team has had as impressive or more impressive conference regular season than either of the above two teams. 15-3 which is most regular season conference wins in school history including big-time home wins over Tennessee and Bama.

This team has nearly as impressive trio of guards (Taylor, Dennis, Radford) as 2006-2007 IMO. I've been on the record that Taylor is the best PG we've had since Law and Dennis is every bit the tough defender as Kirk and Radford different player but as impactful as Carter.

If they have a great post-season (let's say at least 1 win in SECT and then makes Sweet Sixteen), I'd rank their season right up there with the 2006-2007 group (and better than 2015-2016).

They exceed even that bar...getting to Elite Eight or farther...I think you'd have to rank them as best season ever. the Wofford loss in December would be an irrelevant foot note and 'turning point' story given how amazing the conference season and post-season was.

79 - 80 can't really be compared to any of the Aggie teams since 2000. The rules were so different than today it's not possible compare. No shot clock, no 3 point shot, jump ball to start each half and jump ball after every tie ball, and other major differences. The Dean Smith / UNC x 4 corner offense would smother an opponent during the last 5 minutes if a team had a double digit lead and played keep away on offense. Enjoy the ride and support this team. They epitomize the word team.
The 80 Aggies beat Dean Smith in an overtime game during their tournament run. They got stopped in overtime by a Louisville team that had Dr Dunkenstein (Darrell Griffith) and Rodney McRay (both played a long time in the NBA).
You didn't mention we beat Smith's UNC with a four-corner stall.
I didn't because my post was lengthy as it was. I also didn't mention that Vernon Smith was a scoring machine. It's hard to put up huge numbers without a shot clock or a 3 point shot. Vernon was silky smooth would probably be the all time A&M scoring leader in today's game. He drained many 2 pt shots that would have been 3 point shots today. He rebounded at a torrid pace. Claude Riley could fill it up too. Rynn Wright was an enforcer / rebounder / shot blocker and shorter than Smith. Britton excelled in isolation and with the ball in the 4 corner stall. Rudy Woods was a 7 footer who was a better player than he got credit for. Like someone above said, that team took the eventual Natl Champs to overtime and should have won. It was an awesome high octane group that didn't start fast out of the gate but jelled as a team once conference started. Don't get caught up in comparisons but don't short change this group when the game was not as fast paced as it is today. I love this year's edition. I made the trip to CS and watched them take down Vanderbilt. I hope they catch a good seed and continue the ride.

Didn't Gil Brandt and the Cowboys try to get Wright to play football after he graduated. If memory serves me correctly they wanted to try to make him a TE

And don't forget Dave Goff, RIP. Pass-first PG who made the steal and sank the winning FT against Bradley, or there never would have been a UNC or Louisville game.

This is the correct answer. And Claude Riley and Steve Sylestine to boot. Britton was a different breed of cat, lol.
I played High School ball with Steve Sylestine at Clear Lake.

He was a lot better than me…

Played a lot of pick up ball in DeWare with Dave Britton. Great guy.

Rynn and Vernon wouldn't even talk to us mere mortals.

"hope they catch a good seed" and catch good refs, but we got upset and desperately put up too many threes, the refs didn't even have to continue making ghost calls after about 12 minutes.

The best A&M team I've ever seen was the 2007 team. They made it all the way to the Sweet 16 and were a bad call away from the Elite 8. They had some elite talent on the team.

This years team may have been a product of a weak SEC in basketball.

That Acie Law missed layup against Memphis still haunts me to this day. That team would have mopped the effing floor with this year's team.

The OT loss to Louisville was worse. IMO.

That team could have won it all.

Yeah, you're probably right.

The basketball loss to Louisville and the 1975 football loss at Arkansas cost us at least shots at titles.

2023, maybe a top 10 Aggie team.
