Why can we not defend or shoot the three!

Every loss we've had this year and others we get beat because we just suck defending and shooting the 3. Is it that hard to find some kids who can shoot yet we add more bricklayers like Garcia and Robinson instead of a an actual kid who can shoot the three consistently.

Most smart teams can play on our over pursuit to create open shots from 3 or even layups. If we don't turn them over it's usually an easy look. Boom bust.

Our guys can't shoot consistently.

This happened over and over in yesterdays game. And when we needed stops after getting the lead under 10 several times, Boise made them pay on selling out defensively. Hard to fault hustle, but they got burnt most of the game in this defensive scheme.

Yes. We had a really hard time making a mostly slow team settle for bad shots. You can't tell me just playing straight man with no tricks doesn't yield a better result.

Buzz doesn't defend the three.

He's said that numerous times.

His goal is to defend so teams are forced to take a three

I watched with someone who isn't really a basketball fan. He asked if our strategy was to chase them to easy shots.

I remember when we wanted to fire BK for giving up 14 - 3 pointers to Michigan…..more things change, the more they stay the same.

Both Method Man posts in this thread are right on!

We can trap short slow guards who can't see out of the double team....particularly at home with our crowd noise
and out athlete some lesser programs. But pretty good teams like Murray State, Colorado and Boise St. who have some savvy players that shoot the 3 ball well and can pass out of a double team will burn our D as we have seen. We also foul a lot and give up a lot of points there.

Buzz needs to realize why these teams are shooting at higher averages than their avg for all other games.
It is because they have wide open shots from the 3 line or layups. Good teams pass the ball faster than the defender can move and find the open man.

I agree we would be better with a straight man D maybe with some trapping at times depending on the opponent
and game situation.

Some stats that tell some of the story vs Boise State.....

BS had 15 turn overs with 9 of those being steals
Ags had 9 turn overs
BS shot 29-36 free throws
Ags shot 18-26 free throws

BS won the boards 33-28

total possessions almost the same

BS made more free throws than we shot! If we had made all our free throws
we would have still lost by 7 not 15. BS made 11 more free throws and we lost by 15 points.

Is the double teams fouling and the chasing for the open shooter and reaching when out of position
on the layups etc, causing the excessive fouling and subsequent free throws difference? I say yes.

I agree with you and Method Man on this trapping issue, but what I don't understand is how Buzz had so much success at previous locations?

Kennedy overplayed the 3 to the point he didn't care if the other team was rolling out 5 Demar DeRozans. This is the basketball gods taking revenge

Buzz thought he brought in the pieces to combine with those returning.
He has athletes, team guys with good character....his type guys. I am afraid
we are short on offensive techniques and talent. We see a few guys get hot in streaks
in a few games, but not consistently. We don't have a go to guy like Q on this team.
It may be we just have not found the right half court sets to match our ability and strengths?
The 3 teams we have lost to seem to have better poise and better skills on offense.

Boise State Game only:

1. They were hot early, especially on 3's.
2. We couldn't put a stretch of good plays together.
3. Officiating was suspect with a lot of ticky-tack fouls on us.
4. We were cold shooting.
5. Missed way too many close shots. (Ok, that's every game)
6. Too many times when we made a good D play, we would immediately screw it up with a bad pass.
7. Just wasn't our night, for whatever reason.

He'd sub in every 5 mins 3 fouls and switch out with the next fouler

We have a deep roster to foul incessantly

In year one with BCG vs t.u. at home, he let Marlon foul out
in the first half. He knew Marlon could not make free throws and did
not want him on the court when game to be decided in the second half.
It was great strategy as the Ags upset the horns.

well... looking at stats. We're creating 1.5 more turnovers per game on average as compared to last year's team. We are 18th in the country in our opponents turnover rate at 18 TO's.

I am not sure defense is the reason.

My problem is that we aren't capitalizing on our turnovers. I remember multiple guys being open for 3's and we just didn't convert. 5-21 from 3-point land is not good and we missed a lot of easy buckets too.

At the end of the day, if you can't put the ball in the basket, it doesn't matter what defense you're playing.

I'll hang up and listen.

Also a shot fake on the perimeter followed by a floater seemed to burn us quite a bit.
Method Man

Yes that's why we won that game. Because Marlon fouled out in like seven minutes.

Same post could (and has) been made every year of the buzz era. He is allergic to pure shooters.

We are a little better playing inside, but definitely not elite, so we seem to go into every game seeing what sticks or who might be hot that night.

Completely agree. Need to use the trapping as a change-up. By design, the no middle defense creates a trapping opportunity at the baseline and before the paint. That's enough. More trapping beyond that has yielded really bad results including fouls and uncontested threes.
