Discussing with Marc Ag. In this analytics world mid range becomes an after thought but how good would Coleman be if he had a midrange game similar to Joseph Jones?

Why aim for 50% from 17 feet when you can work at 35% from three? I think a shot could come from him. I like his form it's just released a little too high/too much arc at the moment. But I think he'll improve with that as time goes by.

Couple of reasons that a mid range jumper could be better for Coleman than working on a stretch 3.

1). Most importantly, the shorter mid-range shot is easier to master.
2). You would like your offensive rebounder working closer to the basket generally.

Stretch bigs are nice as an option within your team, but with more and more movement towards small ball, I think you want your best offensive rebounders nearer the basket.

Look at our team as an example. We loved teams that leaned on stretch bigs because it kept them at the perimeter where our smaller, quicker guards could overmatch them and it took them away from the offensive glass where they were most dangerous.

In my opinion, it starts with free throw shooting- if you can shoot FTs well, you can build a 3-point shot. It's just a couple steps back. Coleman shoots FTs pretty well; he be dangerous from that range.

Demar Derozan says F analytics and he is thriving!!

Mid range of 17' may be mid-point between the basket and the FT line, but it isn't the median shot length. Seems like 90% of shots are lay ups or 3 pointers and it's making the game boring. Predictable may be a better word for it.

Really good! Ags offense starts with a pass to Coleman at the elbow. About 10 times this year he took his man off the dribble and made a layup or attempted a post move. Square up and add a mid-range threat to that and he'd be unstoppable. He has a quick first step.

Coleman has made a ton of improvement since the start of the year. I think he will make big progress between now and SEC play next year. Don't know if that will include a mid range shot or not though.

Totally agree with OP's premise!

Teams that rely primarily on Threes and dunks are not going to fare that well day after day after day.against really good defensive teams . They will be up and down . You need more options.

Seeing that with Illinois versus Houston right now. Illinois is 1-8 from three

If midrange is a smooth shot in rhythm at 12-15 feet. The things to avoid are the toe on the line almost-3, or forcing awkward midrange shots when help shows in the drive. Pass out of those situations.

For bigs, pick 2-3 spots on the perimeter, preferably the corners, and get good at that first. Easier to master one location than to become a great shooter, plus the corner is closer to the basket and a close-out is leaving the play instead of starting the fast break.

Making the opponents respect his high post shot 15 feet out is important. Coleman still needs to work on this touch from 8 feet in. I would use the backboard more, OG style - like Bill Walton did.

That's the Coug's defense.

That was the point. You're going to run into
Great defensive teams in the tournament that will make the threes very difficult and you need more options if they aren't falling or you aren't getting good shots .

Illini were heating up on 3's at end of half tho. Halftime came at the right time for Houston .

This UH -Illinois game is a great game . Not surprising. Two excellent fundamentals driven coaches. UH is relentless. Having said that I'm not sure they defensive scheme is any better than ours . Different personnel of course.

UH hitting a lot of mid range shots.

UH looks like they could go deep again if they can keep depth issues from wearing them down. They are relentless.

The guy that we need to get his midrange going is Mo. He'll be a handful if he can get that going because he can pass and also take it to the rim, and he can out-physical most perimeter guys. He's also shooting a fair amount from midrange already, so we might as well have him make them if he's going to shoot them.

Agree that he looks pretty good when he has the ball in the lane 10-12 ft from the basket with a little space . Stop and pop, drive, or dish .

Negative. Big man for Tech played a big role down the stretch. Tech didn't look all that great offensively imo but delivered on the ft line and defensively.
