The school and Johnson are currently negotiating a buyout for what would be a mutually agreed upon parting of ways, AL.com learned Thursday night. The discussions remain active a day after the Crimson Tide season ended in the NIT.

Prohm currently makes $2 million per year at Iowa State and if my math is correct, would have a $3 million buyout.

So that would be close to $10 million in buyout money alone between firing Avery and trying to get Prohm?

I'd argue we would have been far better off if we parachuted Avery in to coach the stud Davis class when they signed. Sky was the limit and aj might be regarded right now as a great coach if it went right, as I suspect it would have.

But this year does honestly put a damper in that argument. He was horrible this year.

I'm very skeptical that in Season 5 we'd have had an experience as good or better than the Sweet Sixteen, SEC Co-Champ season that we had. That was a great season. Would have been hard to significantly improve on that year even with a good college coach...much less somebody like Avery Johnson. Who for whatever reason never seemed to click with how to effectively manage a college basketball season despite bringing in some really good recruits to Bama.

I think now in hind-site looking back over the past few years, we were better off that the dream Avery Johnson for Kennedy trade never happened. We can cross that one off the TexAgs Hoops Board Regrets list.

Alabama has persistently underperformed the talent. Johnson had elite talent (Sexton, Keys) last year and needed a late push to squeeze in the tourney. Why would you want him to coach existing talent? He's proven to be a mediocre bench coach in college.

It's pointless to argue now bc it won't happen. But I believe it would have been a great fit at the time. Aj sucking this year (swept by bk) hurts the case though.
