Porter is married to my cousin, so he's family. I always get good G2 about other head coaches when I'm able to chat with him over a beer. He started here, met my cousin here, and does have fond memories about his time here. He is the kind of coach we want. He can recruit, he places character above all, and his X's and O's are top notch.

He's always been successful (Ark St, Ill State, and Loyola), but he's only been hired into basement situations and has never been given the chance at leading a power program. Every job he's had he moved teams from the basement to near-NIT quality. The exception being Ill State where he took them from the basement to a .500 team then got fired after a new AD broke a handshake agreement and fired him after his third year. He never even got to see his first recruiting class become seniors.

BUT, he's native Chicagoan. He knows he's in a lifetime job. He's EXTREMELY loyal and would be difficult if not impossible to pry out of that city. Loyola hired him after the Illinois State debacle when there were no other offers. That said, he always says, 'if the right job' comes around.

Oh BTW, he's tight with Kennedy. He knows how our fans regard Billy and is intimately familiar with our on and off again love affair with basketball.

I think he'd say no.

I'm not doubting that you know the guy well, and I'm not even doubting that maybe even in his own head he's upset at how our online fans treat Kennedy (though I'd think any coach would love to be treated the way our administration has treated Kennedy and your regular Aggie-on-the-street fans think Kennedy is fine) and complains about it.

But, if through some weird series of events we happened to offer him to be our head coach, I highly doubt the head coach of Loyola-Chicago is going to turn down the opportunity to coach a major conference program.

You're absolutely right. Years ago, he told me about a year before it happened that Turgeon was looking to jump. I asked, 'Why? A&M is a great school with near limitless resources?' (this is a conversation we've had a few times).

Porter would reply, '*****, we [coaches] are always looking for a ticket to the top.'

So if we offered and if he accepted, I really wouldn't be all that surprised.

Yeah and I wasn't trying to be rude or anything, I actually really appreciate the insight into what he's like, one of the best things of the tournament is seeing coaches and programs that you're not normally exposed to so getting some extra personal insight into the guy is awesome, especially because he sounds like a good dude.

I've said on here a lot of times that our path to being a real program with sustainability is grabbing a coach on the way up and then being able to turn it into his dream job while he's here. I think we did all we could with BCG and Turgeon with salary/facilities/etc, but Kentucky and Maryland are different animals.

Plus I think it's going to take a certain kind of person to connect with our fan base. Gillispie did it, but Turgeon, as good as he was, didn't. And while I think that can be overrated because ultimately it comes down to winning, I do think it could make a difference.

In late Jr. high school, early high school, I attended a few A&M basketball camps (Tony Barone the head man at the time). I remember Porter Moser well. Tony Barone was the face of the camps and was quite present, but Moser was basically running the camp. Hope Loyola can hold on here in the last 5min and get into the Sweet 16.

I enjoyed working camps when Coach Moser was here. He did work his rear end off when he was Coach Barone's assistant.

He may be a great coach and a great get. But the fact he was an asst. here in the 90s (probably for some bad teams) should not be some huge plus.

I'll go back to the BB press conference and he had the audacity to promote Billy Kennedy's previous 1-year stint here as an asst. on a team (decades ago) that had a dismal record.
EXCELL

It doesn't hurt anything but it sure doesn't make a good coach as we've seen.
I think Porter's body of work should stand solely on it's own merits ... as should any potential coach in any sport.

Barone was perhaps the best Xs & Os coach we've had in the last 50 years. He was incredibly good.
Unfortunately his brilliance in that area was more than offset by his total inability to manage the personalities of his players.

It sounds like Porter may have absorbed the Xs & Os and avoided the nasty habit of demolishing his players' confidence

Sorry Aston, I never made a claim about his ability and his future, just stated a fact about his past which is Aggie related. Seems to me he's doing well as a coach, but I'm sure you know more about that given your experience.

Bemer- I wasn't attacking your post. Just a clarification on what I hope decision makers consider. The fact he has some previous connection to the university is interesting.
