I think it should be cleaned up. Drop the hammer down hard on those who get caught cheating. If it's lucrative for the schools, and they don't want it to be shut down, they'll watch things more closely.

OK, let kids turn pro at the sophomore or junior level if they want. The pro market is not large enough to absorb all of them. Most of the kids will realize their best option is to stay in school and get a degree.

Basketball is temporary in terms of their ability to earn a living as a pro. Get a degree and you'll have something you can take with you.

People will still watch. In large numbers.

Players should get paid and school tuition should be an optional benefit. It's a minor league system already- if the kid doesn't care about school, it shouldn't matter.

You just made my point. Let's bring it all above the table. If we want a player and want to pay him 100k let's do it above the table. Minor league basketball
The G-League is minor league basketball. NBA players in need of PT go there. Newbies get $15K a year. Because no one watches them or cares...or ever will.

I suspect this could hasten the end of the OAD era.

Like MLB - either go Pro: NBA, Euroleague

OR

3 year commitment to University program.

Provide a stupid, like a GA...probably $5000/year in addition to tuition & fees. They already allow this in CFB.

As someone now starting to pay back their kids' student loans, an education is a huge financial benefit!

What you are going to hear the next two weeks is the player deserves this and that . What gets lost is the school provides the avenue for the athlete to excel and get exposure. Big stadiums, great facilities, large alumni and followings. If it were minor leagues they would be playing in front of 5,000 people not 100,000 people.

Another thing that would solve this problem. How about "Don't take the money" !!!. That would solve it

They were paying kids to choose college for a bit over the NBA before the one and done. It's always going to happen, no matter what the NCAA does.

Actually the one and done won't fix this. It'll just move to the next level. The only thing that fixes this is rules you can't govern.

This agency was paying players at Seton Hall

It's everywhere and going on at every major school...it's essentially the process

#1) a head coach making calls is REALLY dumb..that's what assistants are for
#2) For the NCAA, March Madness is its most profitable business, earning roughly $900 million in revenue, most of which comes from the broadcast rights paid by CBS (CBS), parent of CBSNews.com, and Time Warner (TWX). The media companies signed a 14-year, $10.8 billon deal in 2006.Mar 20, 2015
Title IX is the reason the NCAA basketball tournament is so crucial to the NCAA.

they need the revenue to cover the losses on all of the (government mandated) women's sports and the minor men's sports

Can't start paying players variable amounts above the table or the whole system goes down. Make the penalty harsh enough that it serves as. Deterrent even if the chances of getting caught are less than 10%.

Why is it so hard to understand. You get what the market will pay you.

Any athletic department outside the top 50 in revenue makes, at most, half of what the top 25/30 athletic departments make in revenue. Those outside the top 100 in revenue make, at most, about half of what the top 50 make.

The solution might look obvious for a Jalen Rose or from your perch at a Texas A&M making 100whatever million a year but the NCAA is not going to do away with the only mechanism is has to possibly try to make things at all even among its membership---limits on financial aid to athletes.

That limit is the only way the Big East is competitive in basketball, the only way the Big West is competitive in baseball, etc.

GE They are paying them now. So the sport is better off the way it is? Teams that pay more money undervthe table win more. Boy that's sport alright. I get a kick at coaches at some of these high profile schools that are cheating their butts off and standing up there as if they have done something . What a joke. Everyone knows Alabama is cheating but we just show year after year and crown them the best of all time,

I dont see the alternative. Would rather have college basketball in its current form than not have it at all.

I think your thought has been the overall strategy. Leave it the way it is and turn you cheek. The problem with that strategy is the cheating is getting worse and so far over the top that you have a situation you have now. Mark Fox from Georgia has done some strong words on this topic. He blames the coaches . The coaches know what's going on and they are the real problem. Not the NCAA, not AAU ... It's the coaches

Yeah. The strategy adjustment that I see potentially having a real effect would be to make the punishment for coaches so severe that they are actually deterred, even if the chance of being caught is very low. Most of us would still keep our seatbelts on while driving on a busy highway, even though the chances of crashing are exceedingly low. Something like a lifetime ban and having all colleges agree to structure all coaches contracts such that the coach owes an amount of money equal to all money he has received under his contract from that school should be sufficient.

Would have to also improve due process for accused coaches if we go severe with punishments.

Free labor? They're playing a game, not building a railroad.

Don't care. It's crazy why many of you make this harder than it needs to be. Why should the NCAA make billions of these kids. And no a scholarship isn't enough. Trying to cut out cheating cannot be done. Even if you increased the penalty.

Most people really don't want the free market in college sports. They may say it, but what they mean is they want their version of the NCAA.

They don't want unlimited scholarships for players that may or may not have already played professional.
They don't want unlimited transfers, or professionals just putting on a uniform that just has a college's logo on it.

And anyone who says they don't want to watch college sports because of the alleged cheating or non-level playing field should have quit watching at the turn of the century, and I don't mean the current century...like around 1900.

The NCAA is easy to criticize, but one of their jobs is to try to level the playing field as much as possible.
And anyone who has watched college football in their current lifetime knows it will never be equal, or a free market, especially when you throw in Title IX.

Easy to get around title IX with let a player profit off their likeness.

Double Diamond there is one thing you are forgetting. The universities give these kids the platform to do their thing. Large stadiums, facilities, nutrition , large alumni bases that support them etc. If that wasn't available how do they market themselves ? The schools provide all this.

Why do people freak out when we say let's make it above board. It's happening any way. Let's stop the hypocrisy. Or each team has a salary cap. Just like the NFL

Schools will still pay them under the table above whatever the "salary cap" is, this will always happen no matter what you do
